Just starting work on a barn fresh 28 RPU. Have a V8 60 with Eddie Meyer heads and a 2 carb Edelbrock. Any secret things I should be aware of before I get too far? Also have 4in dropped axle with mono-spring and split bones. Any tech help would be appreciated. Thanks
Got a '28-'29 AV8 RPU in progress myself. Don't know if it's a "secret" or not, but every car I've built has taken more money than I expected to spend and more time than I allocated. Bob
My RPU as it sat last winter. LOTS of work... I wish I knew the secret but from what I've learned "Keep it simple", like real simple. After rididng in a friends stripped down and hopped up, banger powered RPU really made me re-think why I'd not followed an even simpler path.
X2. Speaking of times 2... Whatever your budget is, you can at least double what you thought you were going to spend. Better yet, triple it. But, actually the real secret is to just keep all your receipts but NEVER ADD THEM UP!!! You'll just cry or have a heart attack. My .02 OK, but seriously, that V8 60 flattie is going to be hard to find parts for. I think most guys just have 'em around on an engine stand as a curiousity. Picture what it is that YOU want to do to YOUR rod and just DO IT (even if you want to use that V8 60!)! Lots of really knowledgable guys here on the HAMB to give you a hand (I'm not one of them, by the way). Great group here, but make sure you have a thick skin...and a warped sense of humor. Welcome! Good Luck on your project!!
i built one in 2005....miss the hell out of it. my advice....focus all your attention on the chassis. Take the body off and just build the chassis. Don't get in a rush. The chassis should be tits, running, and driveable with an egg crate for a seat before you mess with the body. Shitcan the mechanical brakes. As far as transmission goes...don't know what adapters are out there for v8-60's but i'd advise an overdrive manual tranny of some sort or get lucky and find a columbia 2 speed rear. Stock A- radiator will cool the motor fine if the core's good. Over all...function first, looks last- once the chassis's tits, the body is the easy part.
