'28 RPU -- First time around the block

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Detonator, Aug 18, 2007.

  1. Wow. Thanks for all the kind words. It's especially cool from guys that "get" traditional cars. I took it to a little Saturday a.m. car get-together yesterday and a guy asked me if I was gonna put the fenders back on...

The puke tank is a WWII shell casing. A guy told me it was a 50mm, but I'm not really ordinance-savvy. I found the cap in junk store in Napier, NZ. You Kiwis will know where I'm talking about. Art-Deco-ville.

Love it man. You've got good taste and really perfected a RPU in my opinion.

That RPU is perfect! I love the way the exhaust follows the reveal in the 32 rails. Everything on the car is nice and tight...no wasted space. This thing screams Rodders Journal material. Hint Hint. BTW do you have any close ups of the windshield, I'v never seen an adjustable 28/29 windshield before. Way to go!

  4. This was an after-market item sold in the day. It actually allowed you to fold the windshield FORWARD -- I guess so you'd have a flat surface to park your beer can and ashtray.

I chopped and flipped the stanchions backwards, side-to-side, so the windshield could be raked back...

I hate to be the one to spoil the party, but I have to. Here are 5 of the things that I hate about your rpu:

Simply wow. You must be very proud. If it took you 20 years it would be worth it.

I agree, I think they look better with the fendermounts left on!
Has a great profile! I'm curious what you did with the frame from the back of the cab area and under the bed. can you post some photos of this?
    Excellent job! Bravo!

Not much else to say. No cookie cutter here, just neat hot rod. Now, make up for the 5 years of missed driving time and put some miles on it.

  19. Afternoon update -- Hey, thanks for all the positive feedback. Been running around all day in the rpu. I'll go out for a spin, then pull back in the shop to tighten and adjust. I'm trying to dial in the play between the pressure plate (Diaphram style) and the face of the throwout bearing. One guy told me you have to check the gap with the motor running -- I'm sure as hell not stickin' a feeler guage in there. It would proabaly take my finger off...

coupeHEAD -- Ah, the interior -- super secret plans, I found some material from the planet eBay. Will keep you posted. Got to fab the seat back and finish the door and kick panels. There's a local gut that's covering them for me.

Jigger & Brudwich -- Yep, it's a Nailhead: '54 322 with a Schneider cam, Offy intake, three 94s, and an HEI built into the stock dizzy.

Vonpahrkur: I raised the bed up higher than stock, so I had to roll a flange into a couple of flat panels shaped to fill the gap-osis between the bed and frame. I bolted them onto the lower bed rail with "rivet nuts." It was pretty simple:

  22. Ha Ha! Not sure who he was, cracked me up though. Gumdrop?

Now that I need to put some break-in miles on, can I come out and see your new paint?

  24. Looks more like a 40mm Bofors casing, 20mm are kinda small.
Nice RPU, this just makes selling mine all that much worse!
