Since both the 283 and then 327 were around into the 60's, I have a motor question. Can I use a 327 small journal block with a 283 small journal crank? (301)

Yep, as long as it's not a Rambler 327!

Yep, have built at least 10 motors like that. Just sending one to Florida, as we speak.
All 265" and 283" crankshafts up to 1965 were forged steel and will take the high revs.
Back in the 60's, that combo was the hot ticket for street racers, as well as on the strip.
    Cool build.

If you use a std 327 block with a 4” bore you will have Chevrolets 302. If you bore a 283 to 4” you will have the hot rodders 301.

  15. That is a fantastic sounding Small Block! I love listening to Chevrolets like that. I wonder what the engine and camshaft specifications are to allow that kind of RPM?

I'm working on tearing a '64 283 apart and it has a cast crank. I believe cast cranks started in '64.

Then you would have to run a 250 crank but you would still have a 327.
