I just re-built a 283 with plans to use it in my '39 Mercury. I am using ram's horn manifolds but the alternator bracket is not what I'm used to seeing. This manifold and bracket bolt together at the front of the casting. The problem I'm having is that the lack of alternator rotation puts the alternator way to the side, so much that I haven't been able to find factory arm arm to secure it that is long enough so I ended up making one (and a 1" spacer to get the pulleys to line up) . Instead of forging ahead, I thought I'd see if anyone has seen a bracket like this and how they dealt with it. Thanks, Dave
For an alternator mount for the early SBC it's still hard to beat the simple steel mount that puts the alternator low over the valve cover. Roadster Supply part RSC60470. under $50.

Take to the bracket with an angry grinder and take some meat off that bit where its hitting until you get it over where you want it. If you hack half inch off there the alternator would be down near the valve cover
The Roadster Supply bracket also moves the alternator up and in where it doesn't argue with the inner fender on a fat fender. You do have a short water pump? The brackets that bolt to the left manifold only work with short pumps if my memory serves right. For that manifold I'm pretty Sure that you need the alternator bracket (s) for a 66-67 Chevy truck .
Thanks for all the replies. I looked on SE Chevy site and they have the same ram's horn for sale and it's listed for mid 60s Corvette and a bunch of full sized cars from '64-'68, right where I thought it should be. I was a little concerned about grinding the bracket because I didn't want to compromise the strength but it's beefy and well braced so I took ActionYobbo's suggestion and took my grinder to it. With some restraint I notched the bracket enough to bring the alternator in considerably and am able to use a stock brace, and I'm not concerned at all about the strength. Small steps on the journey...
I can't find a picture but I bought a set of ram's horn manifolds with holes for mounting an alternator bracket on drivers side and a set of holes I believe that are on the p***enger side for the air conditioner .
Yep, that's the 64 Impala style brackets, that's what I used on my 62 Impala and it worked out great. Not sure it would fit well in the engine bay of a 39, though.
