Hi guys, please excuse my ignorance...(I'm a metalman not a mechanic haha) but ....I have transplanted a 283 into my F1 which came from a 64 Pontiac Laurentian with Powerglide.

I'm converting to manual 3spd 57 box. I know I need a spigot bush but do I also need a harmonic damper (balancer)? In the Ponty it had 2 bottom pulleys .

    Many thanks in advance ,Paul

No, a 283 is internally balanced.

Here is a Pioneer number for a balancer that was used on 302, 327, 307, and early 350s light and small 6.125" od should work good on a 283. DA-3270 auto parts store should be able to cross the number for you.

the pulley should unbolt from the hub. if you need just a single pulley any early short water pump lower single pulley would work from 55-70

early small blocks had the pulley integral with the damper.

I hate to start another painful discussion about TDC but make sure when your timing marks are aligned you are at TDC.

Another thing to keep in mind is the older small blocks had a press on damper. It's a good practice to tap the end of the crank for a bolt like the later model SBC. Ron
