Yeah i searched it, and none of the results help. So back off on the police work. Trying to get my 283 fired up. Stopped by the machine shop and grabbed a spin on oil filter adapter, stuck it on and off course it doesn't work. Went to my box of parts from when the engine was tore down and found the byp*** plate. Everything i read says you have to use both, but how is that gonna work? They don't mate up at all. This is driving me crazy! Am I missing something? HELP! :D 20210813_183739.jpg 20210813_183809.jpg 20210813_183823.jpg

If your block is ‘68 or later you want the adapter that is on the left in your first photo.
I don’t recognize the other one, I wonder if it is part of a kit (with a piece missing) to use spin on filters on the ‘67 and earlier blocks.
On second thought, I bet that other one might be for the cartridge filters that use the canister.

there are two different adapters, one for early blocks with the canister (the big one in your pic), the other for later blocks with spin on (the smaller one).

If you have an early block, which it probably is since it's a 283, you need to get the canister and PF141 filter. Or get an aftermarket spin on adapter, as you don't have one yet.

some of the aftermarket adapters need the original byp*** piece that you do have.

this is the aftermarket part that replaces the canister, and uses a normal Chevy spin on filter. You need to use the large byp*** thing that you have in your pictures above, between this part, and the block.

most hot rod places sell these. They leak some times.

Use the big byp*** plate that you already have and get a canister and a PF-141 element and be done. It won't leak either! :D;)

The canister will hit the exhaust on the left side i believe. I have the canister and bolt. I'll try it, if it'll fit that's what I'll do. Thanks guys

I have one of those on my 283, it hasn't leaked in half a dozen years. Maybe I just got lucky.

When this dumb high school kid changed the oil on his 57 the first time he didn't realize there was a hard fiber seal still in place, guess what happened on the first startup.
    Still hate those canisters!

any self respecting straight axle car should have fenderwell headers shouldn’t it??? Then the exhaust won’t be near the oil filter... LOL

I'm planning to put the canister back on the 1966 396 when I put the engine back in my truck.

The 64-67 Chevy II V-8 283 and 327's came with screw on filters.

And we'll have to wait and see about fenderwell headers, right now i just want to start it and break in the cam. I'll get the canister filter tmrw and be back in business

You're gonna LOVE it!!! :D Lol!
You shouldn't have much trouble with clearance, weather you're using manifold's or frame exit headers, the screw on PF-35 style filter was still in the same spot, you should be fine. ;)

And short one's at that. Can't hardly blame the canister for the leak, though...

One more question, sbc gasket set doesn't have a gasket for the byp*** plate. Is it acceptable to put a thin layer of rtv on it? 20210813_195232.jpg

I'd never put rtv on internal engine parts

I really wouldn't worry about it. Definately NO RTV! If you feel like you need a gasket, they're not that hard to make. Personally, I would put a piece of 400 grit sand paper on a flat surface and do figure 8's with the adapter to make sure it was flat, bolt it in and run it.
