My 66 283 that I just got back from the machine shop this week had an O-ring on the adapter like what squirrel posted but no gasket to the block. image.jpg

Mine uses this piece bolted to the block, it has the byp*** valve in it. Then the filter cartridge seals against it. From what i have read on it, if you don't use a gasket, it will leak ridiculously. 20210813_225503.jpg

I see what you're saying, kinda looks like a gasket. I was pissed lol, all that was left was to put a filter on, drop the distributor in, wire it up and start a fire in it. Postponed til tomorrow i reckon, damn Friday the 13th

  7. Hi Lloyd,
Sorry man,,,,,I almost asked a few weeks ago if you had converted your oil filter from the canister to a spin on .
You can buy the ones like squirrel and some others have shown for 25-30 bucks from several sources .
A quick search on EBay showed Mr Gasket,,Ecklers,,Derale,,,Purolater,,,I can’t remember all the different brands .
Like Jim said,,,you still have to use your piece under the adapter,,,,at least with ones I saw .
I’m sure someone makes a piece that might include that as well ,,,I’m not certain .
Speedway has a couple of different models on their website as well .

I would definitely reinstall some sort of gasket under the original piece,,,,,if the factory put one in it,,,it needs it .
What does the back side of your part look like ,,,,probably not too hard to make a gasket .
    Good luck man .

Lloyd F.W.I.W, I'm not running a gasket between the block and byp*** on mine and it's drier than a popcorn fart around the canister. Maybe I'm just lucky. I think the key to no leaks is to make sure the o-ring that goes into the cavity between the block and the byp*** plate is squarely seated and not twisted, then don't try to screw the canister all the way into the block, instead, firmly push the canister into the block cavity (don't spin the canister after gasket contact) and thread the bolt in by hand until the bolt stops, then tighten with a wrench, haven't had a leak yet. That's what has worked for me, but it could be just plain 'ol Dumb Luck! ;)

  9. 427 ,
I think you are right,,,,if he goes back with the canister filter.
The large square o ring should pretty much do it ,,,and not leak .
And even the screw on adapter ring will probably do the same thing .

Like you did,,,,careful application is the key to success !

What's up Mister! Well i thought that all i had to do was stick the spin on filter adapter on there and i was done! But when i spun the filter on all i got was a clunk, no rubber seal contact, that's when i said uh oh. But I'm good for now. Went to the local parts store, they had the filter, but the canister seal was gone from the box, so i made a trip to the next town over. Got what i need, at least i think so lol. I'll order the correct spin on adapter on my next shopping spree. Now to clean this damn canister lol

I don't think a leak at that point would leak externally, but potentially could increase the rate of oil byp***ed.

Hahaha! Nope, not out of oil. The trans may seep a little, but the engine is dry (even the rear main).

Tried to post a video, can't figure it out. But it runs great, after 30 minutes at 3000rpm it's idling at 40psi and 180 degrees. Sounds great. @scotty t will have to vouch for me, i text him the video :D

This one is a terrible design. First time removing filter one see's why.

Are you running a Standard Shift Trans.??
    or Automatic.??
if you are running a Standard I would run the Original Filter with a ****ter Sheild.

If Automatic run what ever you want

At the risk of beating a dead horse and hijacking this thread, which I'm not, I'm just curious, was there ever a gasket under the byp*** plate from the factory? I don't ever recall seeing one, early or late model. Have any of you Hoodlum's run across one in your travel's? I have seen them on late model remote oil cooler factory installations, but never on standard installations. My curiosity is killing me, here. @squirrel, @gimpyshotrods, you guy's have any input? If there's anybody that can shed some light on obscure details, it's you two. Ok, back to our regularly scheduled programming... ;):D
