When you think about it, byp*** valve seals 100%?

Well this confirms it, every single early small block I've torn down has been molested at some point in it's life and put back together half ***ed, including my own. Thanks for the info gentleman!

Wait a damn minute! Lmao! I didn't put a gasket on mine. It's not leaking outside. Valve covers on the other hand  it'll do until i go further into it. I'm tickled ****less with it and i thank those of you that helped me out. Now onto some bodywork. Gotta get a driveshaft made. Battery mount in the bed, mount the fuel cell, run the fuel line, build the floor, figure out what rear end (supposedly got an 8.8 but I haven't seen it yet) i stuck the hood on and pulled the springs off, gonna run hood pins. If anybody needs those springs let me know 20210814_191446.jpg

like was mentioned some where in the thread, the gasket missing will cause a small internal leak, and it'll be fine without it, as long as you have decent oil pressure.

Valve cover leaks...yeah, they're tough some times. Straight flanges, thick cork gaskets, football washers on the screws, all help, but it's still a lousy design. Once you get them to seal, be sure to check the screws are tight every oil change.

    Looks good!

I used a "Perma Cool 1134" cannister to spin-on conversion adapter on my 283.
The reason is it is one-piece and doesn't leak. [it totally eliminates the old adapter]

But it doesn't have a byp*** so I used a Fram HP4 byp*** filter [alternative Baldwin B279, or Purolator L35132 filters aren't available in NZ]

I have friends that have used the cheaper conversion adapters [that retain the old byp***] and they always get leaks.

Thanks squirrel, i pulled those covers off of the wall, didn't change the gaskets, just put em on to turn the engine upside down to change the oil pan, then decided to leave them on. Guess i gotta actually put the new gaskets on :D

I have a set of the Speedway Patriot Fenderwell headers that could be had VERY cheap. Never been run. Down side is they are for a 41-48 Ford. I have noooo idea how close they are to whatcha need. But I'm taking em to the Frog Follies to sell unless you wanna try them.

What is VERY cheap? I looked at those on speedway's website but I'm not sure they'll work either, i haven't measured. They're not bad on the price for a new set.

Heya Lloyd, congrats on a successful engine start-up...it's not always easy keeping all those moving parts INSIDE the block:eek:;)

By the way, I think I need Lola's phone number;)

I can say for sure that if you put one of the regular spin on adapters on one without the byp*** valve under it you will crack the adapter when you tighten the bolts down causing a leak and without the byp*** valve you don't have a working filter from the get go.

I'd say that 90% of the byp*** valve gaskets (gasket part number 3903322) Got lost when some service station lube rack jockey took the byp*** valve out to get the stuck O ring out or the bottom one in the stack of them out.
If you worked on enough engines with the canister filters on them and say you never took one of the byp*** valves off during a filter change you are real lucky or lying.

Man, with the invention of the crush sleeves in the rubber valve cover gaskets, I have never used a cork gasket since. No more leaks. Best thing ever invented.

    I know……..leaks are traditional.

Been driving the wheels of the Cabriolet. It's running and driving flawlessly...which makes me nervous as hell. It's a fresh build and I'm just waiting for something to break...but nothing so far:).
