well, thanks to the hamb's help i figured it out. i had misplaced the bypass valve gismo and was trying to put a later one in. with the correct gismo in, the adapter to a spin-on worked perfectly. i had to take the filter off the 348 and peek at it to see my mistake...thanks fellows........
