Looking to see if anyone has replaced the rope rear main seal with the upgrade neoprene type?

    Sounds like a good idea,

    Thanks in advance.

Nice Kitty, not relevant to your question but I upgraded the rear main in my y block to neoprene, big improvement.

I have done it. You need to be careful and get the correct one. I believe Best Gasket makes it. 3711X is part number

I did one several years ago, it worked....on a 58 block

  5. The rope seals work ok if a person knows how to install it properly which most don't.

Makes sure you drive out the little anti-rotation pin in the main cap, it will interfere with the rubber seal conversion.

If you have to cut off more than just the frayed ends, you're cutting off too much.

I have a Best Gasket 3711X in my 57 Chevy [It doesn't leak at all]
Their's is a 2 piece design which is better than the 4 piece conversions

    Here is a 2 piece

You cut it level/flush in the block, but leave it protruding on the cap.
When you torque the cap for some crush, sometimes the excess will fray [this will sometimes need trimming]
It is a lot easier to pull the cap several times to get this correct, than pull the crank out of the block everytime to run a sharp blade around it.

here's an Aussie video [on a Holden V8]
