Thanks bowtie - so I should be able to run the 268 grind cam with 2701 performer and 600 CFM carb? I will be losing some flow with the PP heads- I have been looking at some double hump style world product heads 67cc 1.94 intake and 1.5 exhaust. Wasn't looking to spend a grand more right now.. Thoughts?

  2. So what do you want to do with the 283 in this truck? Street driving with enough oomph to get out of its own way respectably at a stop light? Or high rpm racing where you want to make more power at the top end? For equal power, a 283 needs to spin more rpm than a 350 just to move the same amount of air and fuel.

So how much time will you spend in this high rpm range. Is the bottom end set up for Sustained high rpm?

I'd guess you want some spirited street driving so I'd go with a combo that produced the highest average power vs highest peak power. The key is velocity, the trick is getting the highest velocity in the desired rpm range, the result is a high but flat torque curve over a broader rpm range.

31 Vicky thank you- yes enough power to get out of my own way- no racing - dependable motor. Driving the truck with the 195hp was just doggy. I still may put a set of matching heads just to be complete. As far as the bottom end goes - all I was told was the motor had been rebuilt not to long ago and upon inspection the motor internally is super clean - some buildup around valve seats.. From reading stuff from all you great minds - I put together this setup- hopefully it will sound nice at idle and scoot a bit. I dream is to drive Power Tour .....we all have dreams.

  5. Well mind the velocity and within the desired rpm range where you want the power. The 283 will have different and lower flow demands than a 350 at equal rpms. Big ports and runners and exhaust primaries will kill the 283 velocity at low and mid range rpm. Small ports will strangle flow at High rpm.

283 isn't known for being a torque monster, they like rpm to make any power.

That's a good dream. I'm thinking about doing that myself next year.

You're not alone Larry, as much good info as Slammed posts, I usually spend more time paying attention to his avatar too.
