From what I have been told, most all, if not all of them did. Experts will jump in soon I am sure. Cheers..........
Google magic. Not all 283 cranks are forged. http://www.ajgeneral.com/chevy_crankshaft_casting_numbers/ http://www.nastyz28.com/sbcmenu.php http://www.1968ss.com/SBcranknumbers.asp http://www.kendrick-auto.com/chevrolet_crankshaft_casting_num.htm http://outintheshop.com/faq/casting/castings2.html
Now I would have never guessed I was always told that all 283s had steel cranks and just never tried to find out that they didn't.
I have a 66 (I think, going from memory) 283 that has a cast crank. Easy to tell by viewing the parting line. The engine is already 0.060 over, but the bottom end is good shape. One day I will find a use for it.
Cast cranks were a lot more plentiful than forged if I remember correctly, the part line is the quickest way to differentiate, and a forged crank doesn't ring quite as much like a bell when struck lightly. Cast cranks are fine up to 375 horsepower.
Some 1963 to 1967 283 Chev and GMC light trucks had cast cranks. Some 1964 to 1967 283 Chevy II's had cast cranks. By far most 283's had forged cranks the most popular version.
