    Hello everyone,
I was wondering if all the front accessories from a 283 will bolt onto a 350? Used to be you could find 350 engines whole but seems not lately. Wanting to build a larger displacement engine for a shop truck and not break the bank. Maybe shoot for a stout 355?
Truck is a 64 LWB Fleetside 283/th350/3.73 gears.
    Thanks,
    Mark

    Thank you sir!

  4. Depends on the water pump more than anything else. Long pump V short pump.

Sometimes you have to shim the the crank pulley, the shims are cheap.

The 350 is going to come stock with an alternator. I think that GM did not use an alternator until 65 (I can never remember the year for sure), so there is that to consider as well.

But basically yes most if not all front drive components will swap over.

Appreciate the information sir. I forgot to mention the 283 that is currently in the truck has an alternator, side motor mounts so it's not an earlier block and has the HEI distributor.
I guess what I am concerned about is the pulley & bracket(s) set up. Since most cores I have come across are bare. I am going to look for something that hopeful will at least have the crank and internals...Heads would be a plus.

If you use ALL of the stuff from the front of the 283 (pump, pulleys, brackets) on the 350, it will work. But do use a 350 damper on the 350. The pulley mounting surface is in the same place, but the damper is larger to calm the bigger harmonic vibrations of the longer stroke engine.

The later brackets bolted to the heads and water pump. If you use early heads make sure they have bolt holes in the end if you plan on using the later brackets.

he's planning to put the early stuff on a later engine, so no worries about the bolt holes in the ends of the heads.

(at least if he really has original 283 accessories, which is in doubt because we haven't seen any pictures yet)

Yeah, that's 283 stuff from the mid 60s. You shouldn't have any problems.

I enlarged the pics, always select "full image" when posting pics. Not that it matters but it seems like you have later heads with the accy holes in them already, not that you need them. They are not 283 heads and are maybe something you can use on your 350 if a short block is all you can find....

oops, with the pictures enlarged, it looks like the alternator support bracket is the later style that uses the holes in the front of the driver side head (but 350s come with those holes). The bracket was used on early 70s trucks and Corvettes.

Thank you sir. I ran the casting numbers for the heads and they are 307.

Thank you for the tip on uploading. The casting indicates that the heads are from a 307.

307 heads makes sense...the 307 was just a stroked 283, it replaced it as the low perf V8 from 68-74. They had bolt holes in the heads by then.

I’m confused, I have been told for years that you are supposed to use a small block Chevy because they are all the same. Apparently this is not true

Look at belly buttons on people...just because everyone has one, doesn't mean they all look the same.

I just looked again and the alt support brkt is on a bolt to the intake manifold, the one that is bolted to the head looks like it is doing nothing more than holding a throttle return spring

I just looked again, and I got it wrong too...the bracket to the water pump bolt also goes to the alternator support, where it bolts to the very front of the exhaust manifold. Like it should on a mid 60s small block.

  24. Absolutely love this !!!!
