well , in almost 50 years a lot of stuff can get switched around by previous owners a 1966 283 also wouldn't have those valve covers and the intake would have a front oil fill tube those are Power Pack heads
John might chime in ( carbking ) but I remember our farm trucks had the big ugly square ones on them . and a q jet was a 67 up item .
My 66 Bel Air Wagon 283 has the rochester 4GC square bore carb, intake manifold breather / oil filler and Chevrolet script valve covers. For what its worth
I've had a bunch of Impalas. Don't think the Q-jet was around until 65. My 66 427 Impala has factory Q-jet.
I don't see a number there. Also, Lee said those were the good heads, anyone care to expound on that?
I'm pretty sure by the time Q-Jets came out (66 327 and big buicks) 283's were relegated to 2bbl duty.
all 66 models filled through the tube on the front of the intake. That might be a 283 but it has later model valve covers and intake/carb on it.
Those heads are Power pack heads...usually came with a 4 barrel...yes, they are great heads to run on that 283.
'69 or newer intake with a Quadrajet that doesn't appear to be from any Chevy, due to the front fuel inlet (Chevy fuel inlets came in from the side). NO 283 came with a Q jet from the factory.
Manifold looks to be early 70's, valve covers are mid 70's. Engine otherwise appears to be correct for the truck. 66 truck 283's were 2 barrel, the 327's had Rochester 4 jets. All were front oil tube manifolds. They also had a thermostat byp*** that ran from the top of the water pump to a spacer/riser that bolted on the thermostat housing. Mine also had a metal upper radiator hose. Oddly enough, my 66 Chevy trucks' "High Torque 327" engine was also painted detroit diesel green. Then of course I got it, and proceeded to throw away all the truck specific parts like a bonehead. Oh well, I was a kid.
Don't mean to get off topic, but the word Q-JET always reminds me of James Taylor going to parts store for a kit for Warren Oates leaking carb on his new Pontiac Judge. Counter man says "That will be $4.75 !" WOW! You can't even buy a carb kit in a parts store nowadays !!! Ref: Two Lane Blacktop
Block casting number #3849852 was 283 block used on 1964 thru 1966 p***enger car (Impala, belair, caprice) ,chevelle and pickups with 2bbl carb . Obviously some one has done intake swap as it originally would have an oil fill tube and script valve covers with no pcv valve. If there is no numbers on the pad someone has ground them off or block has been decked. Date code will be on p***enger rear of block with cast raised couple of letters with I think 3 numbers, should end with 4,5,or 6 (1964,1965 or1966)
I'll look for the date code. I don't see a draft tube. I have a four bbl manifold with the oil fill tube and the 4GC carb, but it's pretty heavy, and up on a high shelf. Would that have a PCV on it so I can run bare valve covers? I didn't want to drag it down today, not feeling too well.
Also it should have the hole behind the dist for the road draft tube in the block. That would make it an early block and most came with a 2 jet or 4 jet. Like said previously, the intake and valve covers are late 60's/early 70's, the carb is a non Chevy (buick, olds, pontiac). Also it should have the short waterpump and small balancer.
Some of those draft tubes are $100 or more. It looks like just a piece of bent tubing, can I make my own?
