all 283's made before side mounts started were front mount (side mounts started late 50's-early 60s). although not exactly everywhere I wouldn't say they are "rare"
It might be rare over there. That should be a 1957 engine. The 55 and 56 265 cu. in. also did not have the side mounts.
I wouldn't think too rare but cool none the less. 1957 are front mount 283's which are the coolest in my opinion. I'll be looking for one for my '54 Chevy eventually.
Pretty rare today. No side mounts means that it is a 57 block. I'm pretty sure 58 was the first year for side motor mounts. Check the 2 letter engine code at Mortec to be sure what it is.
I have a 57 front mount in my shed now, if it was a side mount I'd be using it instead of looking at it.
'58 was the first year for side mounts and '57 was the first year for the 283. Tommy is correct as usual a one year only engine is pretty rare.
According to the Ultimate American V-8 Engine Data Book, '57 283 engines had front mounts only, side bosses not 'til '58.
I've had 2 of the '57 283 engines, one of them is here in the cl***ifieds. Neither of them had side mount bosses, front mount only.
