Did a little bit of searching, guess I didn't use the right combination of keywords. My question is, if i swapped a 289 in will it bolt up to the stock 3 speed on the tree ****** or will i have to swap ******s as well? 1952 ford mainline coupe btw.
First I am not sure that the bolt pattern on the trans is the same early and late but it probably is. Next the flathead is a rear sump motor. the 289 is a front sump which means you need to make a box in the front crossmember to set the pan in. I have a 53 with a 390 and a C6. running stock 390 exhaust every thing fit great. Trans set right on the rear crossmember just had to relocate the holes a bit. Convert the stock radiator over to one in one out and it will cool fine. Also you need to run a remote oil filter as the one on the 289 will run right into the front crossmember. Good Luck
From what i can see your new to the H.A.M.B. if you haven't introduced yourself yet then i would recomend going to the message board and let people know who you are and what you have done to your automobile. As a 1953 ford owner myself there is alot of good information in here, but you have too look around. i belong to the 1952-56 ford "social group" and there are alot of other members who have the same make and model who can answer your qustions. Good luck and welcome to the Hamb. ~gearhead_666
take everything I say on SBF's with a huge grain of salt cuz I'll be the first to admit I'm not very knowledgable on em, but on the rear sump vs. front sump, I believe the early bronco pan is rear sump. We used a 68 302 in a model A sedan we built for my mother a while back that we converted to rear sump.
If you use a 64 on back 289 with the 5 bolt bellhousing you should be able to use the original 52 trans,in 65 they went to the 6 bolt bellhousing and the trans bolt pattern changed too.
The trans will bolt to the 289 bellhousing. Using a front sump pan and butchering the front crossmember is unnecessary. The rear sump, Fox ch***is oil pan and ***ociated parts, first appeared in 1978 in the V-8 Fairmont and Zephyr. Since then, thousands have been used in eveything from Mustangs to Lincolns, so the rear sump stuff is plentyful today. This type oil pan gives you more clearance than the Bronco pan, and will bolt right on your 289.
I had a 289 Bolted too a 3spd in a 64 Fairlane, ***uming this is the same ****** or a close derivative, the key is like junkyardjeff said ensure you have a 64 or earlier block, easy to do just count the bolts in the back.
