I am putting a( metal) roof insert in myself rather than putting fabric back on as original .Originally the coupe had approx. 5 wooden bows under the fabric adding support and rigidity. The fact that I'm going with a metal insert do I still need as many bows or any at all ? I originally thought I would go with thin wall 3/4 "square tubing for the bows and bow them as necessary. Is this really necessary with a metal insert if the gauge of the panel is heavy ?. Your family car has not got roof bows. Or will the metal bows add the extra structural support for the entire coupe body ? Gene
I would suggest using ether wood or metal to retain rigidity and couture of the top. We made the pieces to go in a 34 Chevy where the top had been butchered when it was a race car. HRP
Agreed with Mr. HRP- you need the support to keep the contour in BOTH directions. When I did my Tudor Sedan over, I filled the roof, and before I attached the panel, I ran 3/4" foam weatherstrips ( with an adhesive backing) on top of the bows to keep it from vibrating at highway speeds.Just a suggestion; worked well for me on the last couple of fillers I put in.
if you are planing on putting in a headliner they usually are tacked to the wood bows. 50s and 60s cars had metal rods sewn in to pockets in the headliner that fit into holes in thebody
