Been shopping around to various shops to have the roof chopped 3 inches. I thought about doing it myself but I'm a bit of a chicken at doing it. I don't want to mess up the car after all the work I've done.. Have a question, all the people that have said they would do it say they always remove the doors before making the cut and fit the doors afterward . This seems to me to be a bit strange, why not cut the doors when they are still hung and make the cut right along with the rest of the vertical posts so everything is uniform and easier ?? What's your take on this / Gene in Mn
I wouldn't care how or here they cut it as long as it all lined up and met my expectrations when done. I've chopped two three windows, one sedan and one convertible and can't imagine it would hurt to do it like they plan on doin it provided the body is sufficiently braced prior to.....
I like to remove the doors.. It's easier to work on.. I also like to have the body mounted to the frame and doors working smoothly before I brace the body.. Don't be afraid, it's only metal.. I did my first chop at age 60 and have now chopped 4 coupes and 1 sedan.. I'm sure you can do it and it's great satisfaction to say " I chopped it"...
I agree its all the same. With the body bolted down to the frame remove the doors and brace it well, chop the top and the mark and cut the door. Fit the top of the door once its hung back on the body. Its a lot easier than you might think, just measure twice and cut once.
My take is that if your not up to doing the job yourself then you shouldn't be telling whoever you hire hot to do it. Give any 5 good shops the same job to do and you'll get the job done 5 different ways. The Wizzard
