Hot Rods 29 RPU- "Street/Strip" B/SR Build - Marty Strode

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Marty Strode, Dec 19, 2019.

  1. Thanks, Marty, for showing me the pics of the formed flanges. I would have never thought of that trick to get the square inch requirements. You are doing fabulous work as always.

Dale, the formed flanges, with the plates nested together certainly makes a stronger mount.

Well, tomorrow I am going racing on the dirt, at Charlie Haskall's yearly event. I have Ernie Martin's old Roadster stripped and all tuned up and gassed !

I saw pic of car & was hope ing it was dirt circles. Then went back to details of ad. Can you find room for a 1/4 mile circle race?

That's a little different deal, we have run these cars on dirt lots of times, but you need a safe, well prepared surface, and enough cars that handle, and drivers with some experience. I enjoyed it, when I did it. 2014-10-14 124717.jpg

Racing on dirt circles best racing of any. Narrow hard tires & rough track best of all. Modern gum ball tires & smooth asphalt like dirt spoil it. Many years ago group of us teens given uncles old junker. Took it out behind friends barn took turns sliding in circles for few hours. Great fun even after one guy rolled with no seat belts. Finally ripped off passenger front suspension & junked car

Had a great time, stills video's will be coming, we had Go-Pros and a Drone in the air. Weather was 82 degrees, and the track was loose and dusty, all I could hang onto at times, but major fun !

I have a pretty good video of one of my runs, but can't seem to paste it here.

Hard to tell, but looks like rear wanted to come around a bit

After I cut the opening in the hood, the center of the rear didn't want to lay down. I decided it needed a couple Dzus buttons, but I didn't want to weld the tabs to the gas tank lip, because the original hood will probably go back on some day. So I formed an angle out of 14 ga steel, and stretched the vertical flange to make it match the curve in the cowl channel, and welded trimmed down Dzus tabs to the piece. It bolts in with the original holes where the rear hood hold down was.

That is a little piece of art that few will ever see.

Dang I just checked on the dirt drags at Ediger Farms and that is just 202 miles from my place. That weekend was too busy with cool stuff in the PNW Starting with the wooden boat and vintage unlimited Hydro races at Lake Chelan, The Run that used to be the East-West flathead run at the Hotrod Cafe in Monitor. The Vintiques Unrun at Fulbright park in Union
Gap and the concours de Maryhill at the Maryhill museum and then the dirt drags. Just too much cool stuff in one day to pick from.

I moved the '40 up on the lift, to make some room, since I can't do much on it until the '29 is done. While outside, I took these shots, along with the underside while on the lift. IMG_0610.JPG IMG_0611.JPG IMG_0613.JPG IMG_0614.JPG IMG_0616.JPG

Fantastic great build. Did I miss explanation/build of all that curved tubing under front gas tank & attach to side of rails?

Hey Marty, gotta ask: did you ever polish that Airstream? Speaking of aluminum...

Mike, the reason for all of the tube bending for the tank mount, is the front lower valance will not fit with cross bars. This example of Dean's truck shows why. Dean Lowe 5.jpg

Dave, I haven't had the time to work on the Airstream at all. I am clearing out a carport area, to lift the body shell off, and replace the floor in the Spring.

The RPU looks really tough in 3/4 view. I love it. Nice job.

For the last day or so, I have been working on the roll bar mounting for the main hoop. I started by making the 6"x6" plates out of 10 ga, and the frame brackets and gussets out of 3/16". There will be 4 -3/8" bolts on each plate, but to get them held in place, for the 2 bolts into the frame rail, I punched, drilled and tapped them 1/4 NF. That allowed me to get the rest tacked in place. When I take the car apart to paint the chassis, I will drill those holes larger and weld 3/8 NF bungs flush with the rail, and drill the plates to match. A few more years of practice and you'll have this welding and fabricating down pat.
