I was looking around the garage and forgot I even had this oil gauge I had won off fleabay awhile back. It is NOS and cool but I'm not sure I could really use it if I go to pressure oiling except to see what my oil pressure is at idle.
I started porting the intakes tonight only for about 10min though. How much can you open up the floor into the bowl can you take it all the way to the valve guide opening to get rid of the shelf that is cast in the port?
Well a little bit of a update with some more carb questions. So I was able to fine a nice set of matching Holley 92's both with aa-7/8 bases and also picked up a new dual Thomas manifold. My question is what is a good starting point as far as jets and power valves on this set up?
Cool build, I'll be watching this. Unless I'm wrong, single 92's came on V8's that were rated at around 100hp How crazy is you build going to be?
They are a Holley replacement carburetor for the V8-60 Stromberg 81's with 7/8" throttle bores. They should work and if not I guess I have them to go a little crazier with the build down the road.
I've got a friend with a mostly stock banger. He put on a lakester header and a dual 97 intake. One carb is blocked off. He started out with whatever jets came in it, 45's I think and it was running too rich, changed it out to 33's I think. I'll have to ask him how that went.
I have a single 97,set of 81's and the set of Holley 92's. I will try duals to start if it is too much I have options I guess. My Banger is in motor prison! Well actually at the machine shop getting all the machine work for insert bearings on my C crankshaft, exhaust valve seats, and balanced. Ect! So I'm stuck rebuilding the oil pump, water pump, carbs, ect. Until I get it back.
I have kind of a small change to the build but not really a update. I sold my 6.1 Snyder head and picked up a Thomas repop instead. I is nice but I did notice it needs a little gasket matching in the water neck area.
nice project love them bangers ! i had 2 94s on my coupe ran great i have 2 97s on my newest reilly banger haven't got it sorted yet
Not really a update because I'm waiting on my engine to get the machine work done still. But I did get my reworked B cam to a Winfield 1R specs back from Jim B. today it looks great.
Well life kind got in the way of this project. But I finally found some time to work on it. Since I had most of the parts for the B transmission swap I started cleaning it up and rebuilding it. I cleaned up the gear set in my tumbler with some resin media and pinesol it did a good job. The gear set is a 42-48 set with new thrust washers, syncros, and all bearings.
I blasted and painted the case and rebuilt the double detent shifter with the upgraded springs and balls. I also had to get out the torch to bend my shifter away for my knee. And a 38 Mercury knob . I also added new clutch shaft bushings in the case. And got a B transmission swap mount kit for Bert’s.
Here are a couple more pics. I did run into interface with the pedal mount from Bert’s kit but a little heat and it was clearing good. I installed new pedal bushings and grease fittings in both pedals I even was able to find a NOS grease hose for the 32 style throw out bearing grease cup. I rebuilt and made the mount for the parking brake lever.
It was a slow day at work yesterday so I made a brake pedal return spring and mounted up my brake light switch.
And since my other motors have been in motor jail for 2 years waiting to get machine work for insert bearings done. The other I did get back from the machine shop getting valve seats and a couple cracks pinned. It still needs the mains and rods sized and shimmed which sounds like a lot of work so it will be saved for another day. My Dad had a friend call him and ask him if he wanted another A engine his response was “how much”! $50. He said I will pick it up this weekend. So he brought it home to find out it had a nice model B carb on it and rebuild starter and generator. Well worth the $50 already we thought. So we began disassembly and found it had a fresh Babbitt job done not long ago and had .080 oversized pistons just needs cleaned up and clearances checked out. Also new rings and I already had a modern valve set already so got my seat cutter out and cleaned the seats up. I have a bunch of speed parts to add to the refresh up also
I was surprised to recently receive an alert regarding a new "like" on a post I made to this thread back in 2015. I'm glad to see that you are back at work on your tudor, and was interested in the Bert's Model B conversion you reference above. I am just finishing putting a hopped-up B engine and transmission in a 1930 coupe using a set of Auto Specialties motor mounts for a B in an A frame that I bought back in about 2008 or so, after I had fabricated mounts for my roadster pickup as referenced earlier in your thread. I knew that Bert's had acquired the remaining stock and patterns for the motor mounts when Specialty Auto quit making them a few years ago, but was unaware that they were making a conversion kit for pedals and e-brake as shown in your post above. Did their kit include a wishbone adapter, and if so can you post up some pictures of it? I ended up fabricating a pedal mount and wishbone mount because I didn't think anything was available and didn't check beyond Cling's who makes the adapter parts for the V8 transmission conversion. Also noted your intent to try a pair of Holley 92's. I am running a pair of 94's on my roadster pick-up and have them fitted with 3.5 power valves. Thought that info might give you a starting point for your set-up.
View attachment 4062917 View attachment 4062917 Yes here is a picture of Bert’s kit I used it came with a wishbone mount. Nice project very similar to mine. Also a small update I managed to get my B flywheel cover cleaned up and I had a junk B oil pan and managed to get the rear lower cover off and made a cover for the lower portion of the flywheel. I liked the idea of being able to remove it so it isn’t going to be welded to the oil pan just pack it rubber installed between it and the pan to keep it from rubbing on the pan.
I have some very slow progress to report. First I lighted my flywheel at work and drilled it for a 9” V8 pressure plate. I got the whole assembly with clutch disk and pressure plate down to about 45#. I sent it out to get rebalances and the flywheel was within a gram it just took a small dimple to balance. The pressure plate on the other hand took some weight to get within a gram of the whole assembly being balanced. They were balanced separately of course and tested together. I made a witness make to make sure they got lined up together also.
I was able to get my short block back together. I went through the clearance on the mains and rods they were all perfect .002”. I installed a set of .080” over 3 ring pistons w/new rings instead of the .080” over 4 ring pistons that I found in it. I had a set for another motor laying around why not. I added a oil line to the center main as well. This motor got one of Jim B.’s 1R regrinds. With model valves and a valve job. I did have to add a 1/8” shim at the top of the spring to get my 58-60lb seat pressure and adjustable lifters and a new timing gear set to round it off.
It has been awhile since I made a update on my snail speed project. It is freezing outside so I decided to change gears and do something that I could work on in my basement/shop. I started by taking my set of Holley 92’s apart and decided they would look better polished. As well as new throttle shafts to replace the worn originals. I had a pair of NOS carb rebuild kits that came with everything needed for a full rebuilds even new jets. I also got a set of 4.5 power valves to start. I the I threw on the air filter screens I had chosen and installed my Thomas manifold on a mock up engine to start getting the throttle and choke linkage built. I thought the carbs turned out ok for a DIY polish.
