I'm running a stock 292" Chevy 6 and thinking about bolting n some more horsepower. Tentatively decided on Langdon headers, Offenhouser 4bbl intake w/hot water heat, and either a Holley 470 or Edlebrock 500 carb. Any words of wisdom from someone who has done this? Clearance problems? Linkage issues? CFM ok? Thanks.
I ran a 292 cammed and carbureted in a '41 Chevy truck back in the '70s. Isky cam, Offy intake, ****** headers and holley 350. I might could have used more cab but it ran well enough with the smaller carb to keep up. Note: I didn't seek out the carb for its size it was what I had.
My son and I ran a Clifford 4 bbl intake with Clifford 3 into-2 headers on a freshly rebuilt stock 292. I grabbed a late 70s factory HEI distributor for it. We experimented with Q-jet carbs until we found one from a 4.3 litre V/6 chevy. Ran strong with a 700R-4 trans and lock-up converter, controlled by toggle switch.
My brother has a 68 C20 with a hopped up 292. It has 10.25 comp pistons, a .500 lift cam with decent duration and clifford headers and intake and a 500cfm holley 2bbl. It was surprisingly strong and with a sagnfall 4 speed would spin tires through all 4 gears. Im sure the compression and cam help but the bolt ons are a start
Sounds like a good plan for an in***ial upgrade. I know Tom Langdon is real big on the ho****er heated intake but the headers and intake will do a lot for it heat or no heat. CFM wise you're good in that 500 range. ***uming when you say a stock 292...that includes a stock cam right?? Wouldn't go much bigger on a carb with a stock cam and head. I know of guys running a single 390 holleys with stock cams that work well.
