ok so i'm tackling something that is quite likely going to get me in way over my head.
i have a 292 thats in need of a rebuild and i've decided since i have time and not so much money i'd do it myself. i have tools, and a full machine shop complete with machinist that loves me dearly and wants to help me out (he's my PaPa) the thing i don't have is experience. neither me nor my PaPa has ever rebuilt an engine, done plenty of other work but never a total rebuild.

So any advice? specificaly books that would be helpful. i'm sure i'll have more specific questions once i tear into it but right now it's still in the truck and i'm trying to get an idea of what this is going to entail exactly.

You know, I picked up a magazine last week that had a y-block build and they used a 292. I can't remember what magazine it was, but I will let you know when I go home. I've got a 292 that I will be rebuilding sometime in the future as well.

The new Hot Rod Deluxe has an article on a Y-Block build up, is this the one you are thinking of?

Yes, that must be it. I was in a hurry, glanced at it, saw that it looked pretty in depth, and picked it up.

What are you putting it in?

First of all verify that you have a 292. Get the numbers off the block, and go to Mummerts site and look it up www.ford-y-block.com I'd spend some time poking around that site just to look at things. I'd recommend spending the $54 and buy his solid tubular pushrods. Don't get put off by the prices, he provides specialty parts, not everyday run around parts. While you're there, also check what type of heads you have. Get on Ebay, or where ever, and buy a shop manual for your car. If you can find a parts manual too, I find those very helpful with all the exploded diagrams. You may want to pick up the James Eickman Y-block book. DON'T BUY IT ON EBAY!!! It's waaaay overpriced since it had been out of print for so long. Go to www.motorbooks.com and get it there. Here's a HAMB post about it with some corrections in the book http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=228103 I had to insist on the web sale price when I called. Also, I wasn't impressed with the copy quality, but you use what you can get!

Figure out what you want it to do, and go from there. Y-blocks have a lot of material, so you can bore over on the cylinder walls quit a bit. Also, look for big valve heads to up your power. Also think about what tranny you want to use. If you have the money, I'd recommend buying an adaptor and using a more modern tranny. There's lots of posts about that too. I'd recommend you start doing searches on here for 292 advice. There's lots and lots of posts!

When ever you get stuck, come here before you go to the parts store.

Mine's not a barn burning wheel popper, but it's been a reliable stock motor for several years.

i'm putting it right back in the truck it originaly came in, a 1960 f100. i intend to use this as a daily. well, a whenever it's to cold for motorcycles or i got to go to the grocery store. aparently the tranny was in good shape when it was parked, it's a 3 speed and i honestly don't know much about it yet, but i'm fairly certain i don't have the money to replace it.
    thanks for the great advice!

A word of caution about the EICHMAN book that gets referred to a lot, It contains a couple of errors that could be catastrophic. The others sites usually talk about these specifically.
