i have a 292 chevy i plan on rebuilding for a '64 chevy van. want to run pump gas (92 ok) so compression needs to stay under 10:1. i am considering lump port head but would like to here from someone that has done this, any gain for a street driven vehicle spending most of its time around 2500 rpm? not sure on cam yet, not a daily driver so mpg isnt a concern, just dont want so big that i lose drivability. anyone running a modified 292?
there have been several threads on them. lots of different opinions, as always! mine is bored .060 over, clifford mild cam, clifford intake with 500 edelbrock, and headers. they have the bolt in lumps which i think are the easier/cheaper to install. i know some on hear run them. feel free to do a search you will see a lot if info and opinions.
what size cam? ive heard good things about cliffords 264 duration but it is only 206 @ .50 and cant help but wonder what a little more duration would give me. i plan on larger valves and am considering just buying the head with all machine work done. i did get lots of info from doing a search but didnt find much on cam selection. tell me more about yours, and how it runs. john.
that's the cam i have, the 264 grind. i went with larger valves as well. i had to get the valve springs from clifford too, stck wouldn't work. i just kept the pressed in studs. had the valve jub done at a local machine shop- not too expensive. 3 angle comp valve job. sorry i have only run stock cams and this one, personally, so i can't give give lots of help on selection. this engine runs great in my opinion. prob if i was a carb guru it could run even better. it still retains some of the low rpm torque caracteristics of a stock 292 but not quite as good. so it doesn't drive like a small block. it accelerates up even pretty steep grades anywhere from 1000 rpm to 3000 rpm. it actually has pep at 3000 rpms on up to 3500, unlike the stock 292, but i haven't went much further.
