Customs 292 noise

Hello gear heads, I'm new here but have visited many times, I have a question about piston slap or perceived piston slap, recently overhauled 292 is making me noise and I notice if I plug the breather at the valve cover and leave the pcv valve connected the noise changes. Any ideas.?

What all was replaced during the overhaul? And what was done to the bores?

 

Got to love FNG's. Post a question to the wide internet about a mysterious noise with a twit length description. No pictures, no videos, no details what so ever. Didn't even indicate if it was a Ford or Chevy 292, let alone build specs, clearances, etc. He could have a tiny elephant living inside the oil pan and breaking wind for all we know.

 

Single post so he's going to have to make several more in order to attach anything.

Sorry about the delay we had birthday party for our 4yr old grandson here. YES ITS A CHEVY INLINE6 .040 OVER STANDARD RODS AND MAINS ,REBUILT CYLINDER HEAD , WITH STEEL SHIM HEAD GASKET PRETTY MUCH ALL STOCK EXCEPT MILLED THE STOCK INTAKE FOR A ROCHESTER 2BBL . OIL PRESSURE IS 25PSI HOT IDLE

 

BTW, the noise changes ,almost goes away, if I plug off the breather tube and leave the pcv hooked up to valve cover, could the pistons be backwards?

 

Other then the rpm changing when you plug the breather I can't see a reason that would make the noise stop.
Does it go away with rpm change?

 

Not being able to hear your noise, when you close off the breather you are creating a large vacuum inside the engine. See if any tin is moving , oil pan, valve cover, side covers, timing cover ? ( Don't worry about at***udes here, most are pretty grumpy lately )

 

Martinb, I am glad that the mouthy people didn't drive you away, as you came back with more information about your engine noise. Just bear with it, and you will eventually get the information / help to answer your questions.

A Mechanics stethoscope is a real good thing to have chasing down noises and knocks. About 10 bucks at the parts house and you put the tip of the probe on various spots on the engine until you figure out where it is coming from as close as possible.

If you pull one plug wire of at a time while it is running you can usually tell if you have a problem with a piston. I use a pair of what I call "chicken plyers" = insulated pliers for pulling spark plug wires off plugs when the rig is running. If it has points rather than Hei it might just give you a jolt rather than knocking you on your **** though.

Keep us posted on what you find and it's always good to post what exact engine you are working on from the get go, A lot of Ford guys think the only 292 around is a Y block. Even had one ask why I was putting a Ford engine in my 48 when I told him I had a 292 for it.

Try using a test light, keep the pointy end near the end of the wire as you pull it off the spark will jump to the test light probe and not your fingers

 

Hard to tell from the video but my first reaction is it sounds more like valve noise.
What method did you use to adjust the valves?

 

I've adjusted 2 times, once with engine off rotate engine till rocket is up and rotate pushrod to confirm base of cam then 1 turn in on adjuster. also tried engine running loosened till I heard tapping then tighten 1 turn after noise went away. what gets me is the change in noise when vacuum is applied in crankcase from pcv

 

With them running I always went 1/2 turn after it stopped clacking, 1 turn should not make a noise though.
Does the sound go away if you lower or raise the rpm?
Is there a heat riser ****erfly on the exhaust manifold?
As posted above try pulling 1 plug wire at a time to see if one not firing makes the noise go away.
