I am currently working on a 1960 F100 with a straight 6, 4 speed trans. I am looking at swapping a 292 Y-block into it and have found out that I need to change the bellhoising out if I use the stock 4 speed. If I wanted to put a 5 speed in, instead, and maintain the stock floor location, can I go it? Which trans? What adapter do I need? Any known issues?

    Thank you for your help.

I'm thinking you are just flat going to have to hunt down the right bellhousing for a 60 F100 with a Y block in it and be done with it. then there are adapters that adapt the FORD T 5 to that bellhousing.
I have always had a thing for Y blocks but gave up on them because of the you can't get there from here thing with Ford's this part won't fit anything else way of doing things.

The Y block bell housing for the truck has” feet “ on both sides to support the torque Ford thought you would encounter with the way trucks are used. There is a Five speed truck transmission, with overdrive, that was offered in the sixties, that will fit with just a little work.

  4. Yes the Y block truck bell has side mounts. However the transmission mounting face on the rear of the bell is different for the heavy duty transmissions. The 6 cyl flywheel and clutch will fit a V8 Y block. Ive got one of those 5 speed overdrive truck transmissions. Its a bit longer than the granny 4 speed.

Can’t say i have seen this before , but this how we attached a Y block to an S10 5 speed.
A Mcbar Y block to flathead 3 speed adapter and Flathead to T5 adapter , even the input shaft length was spot on. We were just using parts we had on hand. But being RHD it sure would be nice if we could move the starter to the left to gain some pedal room.

The other reason the bell has the mounts is the front of the Yblock uses center mount under the balancer. The ‘birds used a similar but different piece. P*** cars used more conventional side mounts. Those mounts won’t clear the rams horns used on the trucks. There might be a solution using headers and the side mounts, but I don’t know. Probably best to go find the donor parts on this or other sites. Enough trucks have different (later ford or sbc) engines some of the original stuff should be around. Shipping on the bell and manifolds won’t be cheap if it’s any distance, they are really heavy.

The rams horns aren’t bad if running a full exhaust. Here’s a test on the various exhaust manifolds, as well a lot of y block info elsewhere on Eaton’s site.
