Read all the stuff you can find about adapting it to an 8BA flathead using the stock bellhousing - the same should apply to the early Galaxy with a Y-block. The bolt pattern was the same from 49-64 (for most cars). Using a Ford T5, the two bottom bolts will line up, one upper will need redrilled, and the other will need an ear welded onto the bellhousing.

There was a good post someone posted a year or two ago about adapting one to an FE...

  3. I have one behind my 312, as do a lot of Y-Blockers. It is relatively easy, you can get an adaptor from John Mummert or do it yourself like I did. It is not hard if you have the tools.

There are pictures and a very good how to write up on the Ford Barn early V8 forum, then click on "articles".

  5. so the splines and everything fall right into place once you get the bell housing mounted?

If you're asking about the clutch disk, the answer is no. You'll need a disk that fits the trans.

I'll highjack, but it is related....I'm doing the same thing, except from SCRATCH....got a link on how you made your own????

I put my bellhousing on the '93 S-10 WC T5, and it's not even close. I THOUGHT I heard that at least the bottom bolt holes would line up, but, maybe I'm confusing that tidbit with toploaders...

You're not trying to hook an s10 tranny to a ford bellhousing, are you?

I have the adaptor with a Mustang T-5. Bolted right up, no problems... mctim64 also has a great deal of knowledge. I have his you tube clip saved with some crazy y-block he built and had for sale...

Ok, I did this swap. Fist thing you need to know about is the 2 differences in T-5's. World Class and Non World Class. Thats a big deal that I'll let you find and read. But also, Mustang/ Camaro Transmission or S-10. If you use the Mustang/ Camaro transmission you'll more than likely have to change it for your application (guessing your Stude. Truck?) but it might work out for ya. The splines will be different, but if you rebuild it or have it rebuilt, you can have the chevy 10 spline (10 right?) just like your 3 speed if you go with a Jeep input shaft. Look that one up. There're differences in mech. vs. electric. speedo hook ups depending on what shaft you use. The only change I really had to do for this thing (besides the new drive shaft) was cut off about 1/2 inch (think it was half.. did this swap a while ago) from the guide for the pilot and helicoil the bottom 2 transmission bolts that go to the bellhousing. So now the head of the bolts are towards the engine rather than towards the rear diff. That was it. If you have questions feel free to PM me. I'm most of the time on 67-72 chevy trucks so sorry for my FNG status.

Sorry, the bell housing to transmission bit was for a GM 3 speed/ granny 4 bell housing. Not sure what you have. If it is a chevy I can send you pictures of how it came out on my 64 Chevy Truck.

ONLY if you are using the 4.03 gearset. If using the 3.76 gearset, this is not an option at all. Jeeps only came with 4.03 gearset...probably the least desireable of them all.

Out of curiosity, why did you install the bolts from the bellhousing side?

  19. would a 5 speed tranny from at 2.3 work in the 292 or would that be too weak. Im not looking to hot rod around just to cruise at highway speeds. what do you think?

Too weak & wrong input shaft length...the 4-cyl Fords had a unique input shaft.

I had a friend use a old y-block to flathead adapter then a Ford truck granny 4 speed bell housing with a adapter plate to the s-10 tranny. Dwight Bond makes the adapter plate.
