How far off is the crossmember from your little mounting pad (the "pad" with the mounting holes) on the tranny? I went through this a couple months ago when we put a later model 3 speed toploader into my 55. Mine was only like 1/4-1/2 inch off, so I just took some scrap and made 2 (one for each side) little mounts and used a few scraps of rubber from an old airless wheelbarrow wheel.
I drilled and bolted the new mount pads to the crossmember, also marking and drilling where it would be on the plane with the holes in the tranny pad.
I drilled holes in the rubber, slid them over the bolts, (make sure your tranny actually rests on the rubber) then put the nuts and washers on and tightened it down. I'm not sure if I can get any pictures of it, because of where it is, I can assure you it is not pretty, but it seems functional.
