I have a 48 f1 that i plan on putting a 292 y-block with the stock 4 speed and using my stock dana 41 rearend. Will this be a good setup? I dont do hardly any freeway driving if any.

Sounds like a beast of a drivetrain to me. Go for it!

I also have an 8.8 out of an 89 mercury with 2.73 gears in it would that be a better rearend and gear ratio for the 292 / 4 speed combo?

It will most likely run like an old truck. If that's what you want, go for it.

Hmm i never thought of an 80's 1/2 ton 4 speed. So is that a direct bolt on?

Ive also thought about putting a C-4 behind the Y but then you have to buy the adapter. Id rather find a transmission auto or manual that will bolt to the existing Y block bell housing.

I have also thought about going with a ford-o-matic since we have one in a 56 T-bird with a 312 and it seems to do fine, but i would either have to find one in great shape or pay to have a costly rebuild...

If i did go with a 4-speed the 80's 1/2 ton trans sounds like the way to go...i may have to contact sawzall to see if it is still available or if he has any tips on the conversion.
