2x1 or 3x1 on a 235 I6?

Which is easier to tune/keep tuned? Plans are for a mild cam, dual exhaust, better spark, and 2 or 3 carbs.

After reading the speed manuals for Chevy and GMC 6's, it looks like the air/fuel would flow better with a 2x1 so I'm thinking of selling my new 3x1 and getting a 2x1 but wanted to get some info from those who run them first.

I don't know the stovebolts like some guys but odd number carbs allow you to run progressive linkage- that way you idle of the center carb - and open up the others as secondaries. easier to tune. more low end torque. more flow at w.o.t.

  3. I think I am gonna go 2X1 on my "mod" motor, but it's a 216. I wanna dig up something a little different than an off the shelf offy intake, like a nicson or edmunds. 3 1bbls seems like a bitch to tune, kinda like a 12 or 16 cyl detroit diesel. You could get to that last injector and screw it all up... more carbs more headache [IMG]

Although 5 carbs on a Howard intake for a Jimmy looks really killer!

    I drive a 51 Chevy truck everyday with a 235 with a Offenhauser 2x1,Fenton headers,stock cam.
    Runs just fine thank you.
Did I tell you about running in to a armored car with it?

    VAPHEAD,
Are you using the fender braces on your truck? One of my concerns was that with the 3x1 I wouldn't be able to get those braces on.
Do you know if a fender brace will work with the 3x1 or not?
Does an AD chevy PU do much damage to an armored car or does it just piss of the guys inside with guns when you hit it? [IMG]

Depending what car the engine is in, you have to be careful of the back carb to firewall clearance with a 3x1. Other than that, the simple answer is that the more parts, the greater the chance for failure and harder it'll be to tune. Depends on what ya want, holmes, and how much effort you're willing to put into it, I guess. [IMG]

you will get a big performance increase by going from 1 to 2 carbs, but only a very small increase by going to 3 carbs.

Why not keep the 3x1? You could block the center and run two,or use it to run three.Gives you some options.

A two carb intake must run two carbs or you will starve one side of the engine.
A three carb can be ran with all three, a center with two outside dummies or two outside runners and a center dummy.

Here is my 216 with the Fenton intake and dual Carters...

I got this rebuilt 216 that has been converted to full pressure oiling and has a cam as a motor to get me through until I had my 235 rebuilt but the way this goes I may just keep running it!!

  12. Where did they get the crank drilled? I was wondering how much $$$ that cost...

I will try to find out..

I got it from a friend that works at a shop building cars and the owner of the motor spent all kinds of money on it but was never pleased with the results,,,
$150.00 later and I own it (including the Fenton manifold, Offy rocker cover, 1 new carb. etc.)!

  14. $150? Sigh....

Thanks for looking, please let me know what you find out.
