Well ive been runnin two open element paper filters. I have to change them like every thousand miles. Its expensive and messes with my head. So ive searched and searched and i havent found a thread of whats good to run. Most opinions are in other threads where someone is dealing with a rich running motor, fouling plugs, hesitation and stumbling. Some say to run nothing. But i cant see that as a good idea. My world has bugs, rocks, and plant matter. Ive seen bug screens, k&n style, wire mesh, and spark arrestors.

So what works and is cost effecitve?

Not sure if this is what you're looking for - I also run the paper elements; about $7 a piece at advance auto parts. Mr. Gasket brand and I use the Mr. Gasket bases. Since I've changed to the larger tops I have to change them less often. One cover was a junkyard find and one from a swap meet - lucky. lots of cool covers out there.

I took a 4 barrel carb oval and took some aluminum andmade it to fit the 2x2 and riveted it to the base and now it works like it should. You can get a K&Nfor it

Ive thought of this and have the tecnology, but not very traditional.

53hemi- thats what i have been running but they get dirty so quick that it starts to run like crap. Plus 14 bucks every 600 miles gets old.

Anybody use the k&n style on the 4x2 air cleaners? I imagine i would have to clean them all the time.

Now im thinking ill build my own out of stainless wire mesh that way i can wash them if need be and should flow great. I guess the edmonds are like this. I have no idea what mess size to use and if i should do multible layers or not.

Any ideas or good close ups of an edmonds style filter taken apart?

I'm running two K & N style filters inside of Stelling & Hellings lids and they don't seem to need to be cleaned excessively. Then again my car has a hood so that might keep them cleaner?

I'm going to try these from Obrien Trucker. They have nice filters in them.

So i got a sample pack of wire mesh from mccaster car. My friend jimmy (jimmygrrr) on the hamb, had already made these air cleaner inserts, which work good but the air filter got dirty fast. Not just in the openings but the whole thing. So i made these out of the finest screen in the pack. I just cut it with scissors. Im gunna see how it works and maybe go with bigger openings in the screen. Maybe even two screens. The screens are only 12 inch squares so they are a little small on there own but the filter top and bottom held it good on its own so that is an option.
