Have a 50 shoebox with stock V8, trans (no OD) and diff with a 3.73 gear. I'm thinking I want to put a 3.31 gear in, which is a 51 shoebox with auto trans gear, because at 65 mph I'm turning around 3017 RPMs with the 3.31 I would be turning about 2677 RPMs. My Question has anyone tried this, I know One disadvantage is starting from a dead stop up a hill, are there any other disadvantages or problems. Thanks
^^^^^^^^ I'm running a 205/70/15, 27" tall tire and a lowered rear that's about the tallest tire you can put on the back from what I read from HAMB and other forums.
I did not know that. Yeah, it looks like you would have to run a 30" tall tire to get that same ratio. The only problem I could see with changing the gear ratio would be your take off and speedometer reading. But those are just minimal problems that could be dealt with.
speedo gears are available, but with that gear ratio, it'll be a real dog around town. ever look into an overdrive trans. for that '50? the one that fits the '49-'50 seems to be the most plentiful. and you won't be able to recondition that third member--no parts!
really you would do better with a od easy to get and rebuild the od . i think your going to fry alot of clutch plates the other way.
May have found a 3.54 ring and pinion, has anyone tried that gear? Don't want to spend the money for a old ford OD system, my plans are to later go with the T5 kit, but for now my 68 year old diff needs some help now !
