Hi guys I recently bought a 61 Fairlane with a 292 and 3 on the tree w/overdrive. The problem is the car pops out of first gear and violently at that at anything more than idle. I’m guessing maybe a broken or chipped gear.... The biggest question is???? Is it worth it to have the trans rebuilt or try and find another one that’s in better shape??? Has anybody had one done so I know what to expect cost wise???? I have no intentions of swapping the motor or trans, I really love the motor and having 3 on the tree is a blast to drive. Any help or if anybody has a lead on a good trans would be greatly appreciated!!!!! Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
You want to fix it and most of the replies will be to fix it. What possible problems does jumping out of gear indicate? Does it all stem from the transmission, or are the clutch and shifter involved? What identifiers are on the transmission? Is it a "toploader"? Maybe you can find parts and fix it yourself. I've got a few toploaders lying around.
The first thing I'd check is the shift linkage adjustment. If it's not going all the way into first, popping out of gear would be the result. Only after making sure the linkage is adjusted would I go into the trans. Renewing any rubber bushings in the linkage should probably be done in any case, if those are excessively worn that could be the problem. Those overdrives, while not the strongest trans out there, are probably the best 'cruiser' manual when everything is working right.
It could be something as simple as an adjustment to the linkage, it may not be fully engaging first gear.
The car is just a cruiser-not looking to make a race car out of it. The car also jumps out of reverse also if in gear for too long. That’s why I’m assuming the gears may be bad!!! Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I would check the linkage adjustment, you probably should replace the bushings where the linkage connects to the column, the rubber is almost 60 years old and I'll bet it's worn out. HRP New bushings
Since it's jumping out of both 1st and Reverse I would look at detent ball and spring, unfortunately I think its under the top cover in that trans.
Pick up a shop manual first. I doubt you have a bad trans. The linkage needs to be adjusted back to spec with all new grommets.
