I'm going to install a 472 in a '54 Packard (3 on the tree); I've got a TH400 but would love to stay with a manual. Are the BOP pattern bellhousings hard to come by? Any advice here is appreciated.

    Thanks

Bellhousing might be a little difficult to find, but finding a transmission to hold up to the torque probably more difficult.

  3. There are other posts floating around here. These guys have flywheels and bellhousings, but search around or hit some Caddy forums. The 472 is a popular swap for the circle track guys who race in claimer classes.

If you find a bell housing with GM pattern, step up to a Tremmec T600 five speed. You wont be sorry.

Right, you have to drill the crank for the pilot bearing or bushing and the bellhousing from a later 60s BOP will bolt right on. Flywheels are pricey and the Tremec trans is GOOD advice. You'll also want a damn strong rear end if you're gonna do much playing with it.

  7. the stock Packard three speed will hold up well behind the big Caddy.

    Yeah, that is doubtful.
Back in high school, a mere 55years ago, I adapted a Packard 3-speed to a 287 Pontiac and it didn't last all that long. The full syncro saginaw 3-speed that replaced it did better...

As to the pilot bearing, it is perfectly acceptable to install the bearing in the center of the flywheel.
