Well im building a '27 roadster (kinda, its gl***) and im gonna be putting a sbc and a saginaw 3 speed in it. my question is what's everyone using to convert an old 3 on the tree to a floor shifter.
It's easy - use a 4-speed shifter and block out the reverse arm The shifter for my '49 Chev is off an older Camero, don't even know what year. I flipped the stock transmission arms over and made/modified a mounting bracket. Put the shifter pieces and the transmission on your work bench - stare at the parts and you can figure it out............
Made a search last week for 3 speed floor shift conversion. Found a Mr Gasket on JC Whitney web sight. I think it has been discontinued. Can not remember exact price but was heavily discounted too 50 or 80 dollars. New in box with all the pieces At used price.
As I rember hurst syncro loc- mysyery shifter 3 speed shifter were all the same. EXCEPT THE INSTALATION KIT. we ran the syncro loc on the 4spd trans. seprate rev lever straight heavy rods homemade bracket. nice short throw.
i bought mine at the auto wreckers for $20, it works great 99% of the time, the other 1% it gets jamed inbetween gears in the middle of interesctions, but i have that solved with a really long screw driver and can usely get it unstuck before the truck stops rolling.
You can still get a new Hurst come***ion-plus for a three speed. I just got one a few months ago, it's 1000% better than the Mystery shifters and the cheapo ones.
I see Hurst Indys and others at flea markets/swap meets for $10, if you're that lowbuck. I even p***ed one up with an old cast piston shift knob over the summer. If you get lucky you'll find one that was on a Chevy already, but as long as it's adjustable you aught to be able to make it work. Depending on the type you might be able to find instructions online, or buy another set from Hurst or whoever.
Hurst Syncro-Loc are the best 3 speed shifters. I see them on ebay cheap all the time. Like someone else said the shifters are universal so you can make linkage if you have to.
