I've spent several days trying to get the Fordor top to fit, I'm getting closer but not close enough for pictures.
I've decided to chop the top using the method described in the 1951 Hot Rod magazine. I know this isn't for everyone, but I like it. A friend has chopped several 5W this way.

 

@SkyDriver ...hey Bill, check out the Hot Rod how-to article above...and the era of the magazine. Fits right in with your car and the style/A-pillar treatment of your chop.

@2deuces64 I don't mean to hi-jack your thread...I like where you're going and am watching with interest.

 

I love it, but prefer to not cut the back window so narrow. I like to see them moved down a little so it's a couple inches taller.

 

Well after about a week I have got the Fordor roof figured out. The driver side went together like it was meant to be, everything flowed together. The passenger side on the other hand was a different story. It was shaped differently. The whole side had a different contour, drip rail was smaller, etc. I ended up taking it apart and using part of the Tudor front roof and a section of the 36 roof corner. Took a lot of slicing and dicing. I still have to weld the driver side and do a little more detailing to the passenger side, but I think I'm on the downhill slide. Next will be the front wind shield posts then I'll work on the top opening.

 

This is pretty damn cool - a 3-window from a different mutha but like no utha …. or something like that ….. great work!

 

@2deuces64 Nice job! I'm curious, did you use templates to determine the 2 sides were shaped differently and then to bring them into similar shape, or a calibrated eye?

 

Just checking in on the progress. Looks killer.

 

I stood back and looked at it from the back, it just didn't look right. I then made a wire form from the driver side and placed it in the passenger side , same area and it was off (Low) by about 3/8 ". It also had a peak about halfway above the door. It's a lot closer now, nothing a 1/2" of bondo won't fix. As KiwiKen once said "Bondo is my friend"

 

Just fantastic work! Look forward to seeing the finished product.

Thanks, A couple more pix as of today. Won't be working on it for several weeks, so there won't be any progress for a while. I'm going to have to work on the gaps especially on the passenger side, I may have to redo the drip rail on the back curve. It's just doesn't have the same profile as the rest. I'll get it figured out.

 

Looks good. My friend Jim Rench built a bitchin chopped deuce 3 window that he claimed was in the 10 gallon club? I don't think you'll get there?

 

With the amount of work you have accomplished, a break is well deserved.
It looks excellent and you have inspired guys like me who don’t have anywhere near the skill you do.

Let’s see, build plan, check, vehicle, check, engine, pending, rear axle, pending, paint, what paint?, interior, pending, electrical, pending, mufflers? You don’t need no stinking mufflers! Carry on.

 

You may have ben sarcastic about the bondo but if you must trowel it on use short strand kitty hair fiberglass fill works better than plastic for thicker use.
