So while de-rusting the inside of one of my Merc fenders my brain was whirring away and I came up with the idea for a 3 window Merc. Not one of the abortions with the rear windows just panelled over but a proper job with extra long doors and correct proportions. Being as my car is a moredoor I need to stretch the front doors anyway so an extra 3-4" wouldn't be a major ammount of extra work.To be honest I'm probabl too much of a traditionalist to stray too far away from the normal Merc build but this idea won't go away. I don't have Photoshop so I printed a couple of pics off and did the mods on paper then scanned it hence the ****ty quality. Could it work, what do you guys think?
Ford made one as a prototype and there have been many chopped customs built with blanked out 1/4 windows and shortened roooofs.
Yeah plenty but cant post em!I have photographed 1565 chopped mercs im my life and have pics of many more.My computer is a wreck.Did you get the guard??
It's one thing to "blank out" the quarter windows, but to do it right is a different story. It would be the mercury version of Copperhead, I like it.
I think blanked out 1/4 windows ****.They should have done the Confidential cars and called it a day.
Personally, I think it could work, but I think the back window would need to come back closer to where it was originally - Not all the way, but closer. Sorta more like the proportions you might see with a cason top (but without the padded vinyl of course). As you have it there in your cut & paste...it looks too much proportional front/rear (the length of the backlight/trunk is pretty much the same as the length of the hood) so that the roof looks exactly centered in the car which gives it kinda the same look as one of those oddball 49 plymouth coupes (a short little roof centered on an otherwise long car). I think the hood should proportionately be noticeably longer than the length behind the back window/trunk. If you want, post up a side-on photo of the original and I'll Photoshop what I mean. Based on your kopperK, I think you have the good eye to pull it off, but first just need to fiddle around with the proportions a little more.
Cleatus, here's the original pic Shot with KODAK DX4330 DIGITAL CAMERA at 2007-07-30 00 i'll give Nads a call tomorrow and find out.
Hey, Man, i love it! Maybe like cleatus said with a longer hood/fender line. How 'bout a Cosmo/Cont. dog house with Mercury grill opening & headlamp doors faired in? The reason the '40-'41 Continental worked, over jus' the stock Zepher, from which they were built, was that extra 4''-6'' the hood & cowl panel were stretched to add the necessary length to the necessary balance of m***. The C-post area would be a major metalshaping effort! S****ey Devils C.C.
Anthony, didn't one of the guys from the Road Lords have a 3 window merc? If I remember correctly it was red with a camaro back window or somehting? On ebay about 2-3 yrs ago. IMO not one of the better moves with a merc.
i think it looks great the way it is (cut and paste version)...it does have odd porportions but in a good way i think!! a bit a a cartoonish look with a real car.
Actually, what I meant was an original pic of the 4 door. Otherwise the photoshop will be based on something other than the reality of what you are setting out to change.
Quick and dirty. Use a four door (more metal on the c-pillar) I think this would only look good with a 49-50. With enough time, money and skill this could be done right. Extending the doors and the decklid would go a long way to making it look correct. I say do it!!!! -stick
That looks pretty good. Any idea on how much one would chop the top and extend the doors and decklid to get these proportions?
I don't know about doing it with a 4-door, but you could certainly use it as a parts car, you'll need extra pieces of a roof and doors to make it work. I extended the door slightly on this one.
I think I just blew a load! That's the badest thing i've ever seen done to a Merc!!! ****! You're really something,Stick.
The C-piller of a fourdoor works better, becoming the B-piller,once lenghtening the roof sides. I dont think it would be any more work than a regular chop. Just different.
If my car wasn't already painted...i'd be starting on that RIGHT NOW!!! ****,i'm still dreaming of building one like that!
Ok, the front and rear of the car ****, but the car was built and painted (in candy apple red) by Joe Bailon.
Find a profile of the ZZ Top? "Copperhead" shoebox and take proportion ideas from it. It's done as right as it could be. I agree that the C pillar and uniquely shaped rear of the rear door should be incorporated into the design, and don't over-chop it. Great idea if you pull it off well!
Here is a picture from Riksters site. I like the way Bumpstick handled it much better. The c pillar is not as heavy when you angle the window like he did.
