Just got my coupe back on the road. Just in time for summer. Can any one tell me what body this is and what year? I was told 32 chrysler royal 77 coupe. There are more pictures on the web site. http://www.wreckedmetals.com
If the raised shape on top of the cowl comes to a point in the center near the firewall then I'd say Chrysler product of some sort. Either way, what a bitchin little coupe!
Not a 32, the 32 chrysler has split/dual windshilds and no mini visor, the header panel looks more like the 32 ford. way cool car my guess would be 30 or 31 mopar. Chris
Thanks guys. I haven't had any luck finding out exactly what this body is. I figure someday an old timer will clue me in.
I'm also guessing 30-31 chrysler but could also be a desoto, maybe. Or even a 29. The twin cowl vents and trunk length identify it as a high end car of either brand.
i had two 31 chrysler 3 windows, and the cowls were the same, a 32 has suicide doors. the 31 grill goes to a point in the center. real nice car , need more pics. filthy frank.
I don't think Chrysler went with the suicide doors till 33 and then the hood overlapped the cowl. Chris
I had a guy tell me the other day that the 30 31 chryslers had a split front window. Then he told me the 32 royal 77 coupe had a one piece front window, dual cowl vents, and a longer deck lid. But that was his best guess.
My car is (I believe) a 29 model 75 chrysler. Sport coupe style with a fixed wood/canvas roof. It looks just like yours with the following differences- I have a rumble seat, and not as long a trunk. Also had a golf door on the passenger side. Did your body have a golf door? That might clue you to chrysler versus desoto, I think it was a chrysler thing only and any car of this style would've had one. The dual vents on top rule it out as a dodge or plymouth (I think) My vents are on the side of the cowl, but are the exact same vents & mechanisms according to others I've seen. My cowl bodyline transitions to the hood about 5 inches wide instead of narrow like yours. My doors don't have that little embossed curve right under the window. Same bodyline and everything else. With that big long trunk you better hope it's not an Imperial. Restorers would track you down and shoot you in the face for hot rodding it PS- cool car
Good info. There was no golf door. If it did turn out to be an imperial. I would have to pull out the nailhead and put in an imperial hemi!
Love it with paint... you have to post some more pics of it... before and after's that thing is sick.... I remember seeing it at Bonneville last year and I still can't get over how wide it is in back... it has to be about 6 inches wider than a 32 Ford... Looks awesome...
Man this was a tuff one. What really threw me for a loop was the suicide doors took me a bit but realized It was converted to suicide doors. The 32 chrysler did have a split windshield. Had to break out the books. My first inclination was 31 dodge or desoto but alas they didn't have the dual cowl vents with the peaked body line. The 1930 chrysler products didn't have the body line in the center of the quarter panel. So after much page rustling I am going with 1931 chrysler. By the way this is the best traditional I have seen hands down(I hate fords). References The dodge story, the plymouth desoto story, and the complete history of the chrysler corporation. Here is a picture of the 30 chrysler model 77 I used to own(the 2 tone line is an actual raised body line).
31 chrysler. Sounds good to me. I didn't mean to throw you off with the suiside doors. I should have mentioned that.
Your car looks a lot like a 1931 model they called the DB8. But the twin vent doors throw that out. You really need to solve the mystery conclusively. Mid/low range chrysler & desoto used side mounted cowl vents (even behind fender mounted spares). The top mount vents are a styling cue I've only seen on big, sporty, expensive, rare mopars. Would really enhance this car's pedigree to know what it is. Still to early to rule out desoto IMO. A desoto of that model might be even more rare than a chrysler. Good luck
nice ride! most of the old dodge's and chryslers i've seen over the years have been "street rodded" i approve 100%
