Posted in general discussion but thought I'd throw in here as well> Looking for some opinions on tick in flathead. This is my new build, just finishing and have had on the road for about a month. The motor is a fresh build, runs good, pulls good, good oil pressure. Recently a good constant tick has developed, initially we were thinking it may just be an exhaust leak, so I pulled the headers and the exhaust and discovered some blow by, so I put in new gaskets, permatrex on both sides reinstall, same deal. Another guy thought maybe a valve, though I haven't pulled the intake yet. It doesn't miss and it doesn't run sluggish. Someone also suggested that perhaps the different cooling rates of the block and the stainless steel headers may be causing the expansion to cause a leak but I don't know. I do know that the one flange has a pretty good warp on the header. So we are contemplating putting on the set of Fenton cast headers and redoing the exhaust and see what it does before we pull the intake and have a look. I have read other threads on here with similiar ticking but the posters videos are no longer active and never really got to the results. So have a listen and post up your opinions. Puritan in Primer! Layout is perfect, radiator and shell just right, chassis/wheels in scale with chopped body. Just excellent! Ticking may be due to a broken or 'softened' valve spring, or a tight valve guide grasping the valve stem, then releasing it onto the seat when the cam lobe is down. (I experienced that on a customer's 296" 59A a few years back.) Uncommon, but sometimes...
Your first link comes up as an error. Does the ticking stop when warmed up? Does it do it at idle only? If so, what's the oil pressure at idle? Temporarily, remove the belts and start it to eliminate the generator/alternator, water pumps and mechanical fan if you have one. Take one of those stethoscope sound detectors or a hose to your ear and see if you can pin point the source.
Kind of a long shot... Bought this '46 Ford pickup as a "stocker" with a fresh 59AB in it. Ran strong, great oil pressure...but had a ticking sound. An old time mechanic figured it out. It ended up being a minor crack between a cylinder and a head bolt...letting a tiny amount of compression to seep out of a head bolt...with a tick sound. It was a reasonably easy fix.
