Being new to these cars, I need some thoughts on what my options are for re-working things before moving on to having door panels made. How could I keep the bear claw latch but move the inside door handle, mechanism, and linkage rod back the original location, or relatively close?
Is that a bear claw latch in it now ? Unfortunately that door is pretty hacked up. I would look for another door for parts.
Yes, bear claw latch and agree that its not good.......hoping there is something that can be done to make this even slightly better than it is now. I would be OK with something cable operated or other non-standard but functional set-up. Its been chopped so wont be pursuing doors.
I used new brake cables for a bicycle when I started building mine. Although different then yours still close enough to get ideas from ..
Here's a link on how I did mine, again just to give you some ideas. Forgot I even posted it ! Old age and all.... https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/model-a-install-bear-claw-latches-design-7.1198149/
Thanks for sending that lostone, this is definitely something I will investigate further. I'll read through that link in detail tomorrow morning.
We welded a patch with a bump in it to cover the bear claw , but left some access holes. The black cable sheath one needs secured to the bottom latch edge of the door. I assume in your final rendition the remote lever will be installed behind the door skin ? The pin sticking out of the B pillar in our model A is going to be a real pain catching jeans etc. at present we can’t see a way around the pin sticking out as a D will probably not be adjustable.
