i am building my first traditional model A hot rod. it is a 30' coupe body on a 29' chassis with a 50' flathead V8 and 3 speed trans. i mounted a vega steering box to the frame and am running the lake style headers. the vega splined (steering wheel side) shaft is parrallel with the ground so i know i need to use a universal type of steering joint to connect to my steering shaft. the joints i have looked at have either D or double D or round female ends to connect (weld ?) to the steering shaft. i thought i could find a universal shaft from speedway but they don't seem to sell anything with splines and threads on the top end for mounting a steering wheel. what do you guys use ? should i just cut a old steering shaft to length and weld it to the u-joint ? does somebody sell what i need ? or do i need a whole steering column out of a junk yard car ? i was hoping to use my old model A column with a new solid shaft inside. i would appriciate any ideas or comments. thanks............
As far as steering joints go, check with Borgeson or Flaming River, they should have something that will work. For your steering column you can check the tech archives here to see how to build one on the cheap our you can grab something you like from a donor car.
