I was camping in Conway NH with my young family. I went to the campground store to buy some milk for breakfast and the Boston Herald headlines read that Elvis was dead. Can't believe that was 30 years ago. I must be getting old.

  4. I was designing conveyors for a taconite plant expansion on Minnesota's Iron Range.

Building-up my bank account so I could take a year or two off to go sprint car racing. :)

I was helping a couple guys that were 3-4 years younger than I was, working on one kid's 39 Chevy coupe. I was barely able to turn a rachet in the right direction, myself, but I was the older, more knowledgable guy there. We heard it on the radio, and the young guys started making fun of him. I was shocked to start off, but as I had always been "into" 50's music, I had to tear into those young punks and tell them how important he was to Rock and Roll. I can remember those feelings as if it was yesterday. Reinforced by my lecture on the birth of R & R to those youngsters!

  9. I was camping on Hartwell lake here in South Carolina with my wife and very young twin girls,,,I had a 66 Dodge van at the time.

We heard the news when my father-in-law showed up at the campground that afternoon. HRP

Amen! I guess the good music did.

It is funny the thing's you remember so clearly what you were doing when something happened. I remember waking my mom up to tell her Elvis had died, she was a big fan. I also remember the first time after that when I saw Elvis at the mall.

I was driving to work when I heard it on the radio. I remember thinking it was some sort of publicity stunt. I guess I was cynical even as a teenager.

Funny I can remember exactly were I was driving when I heard it on the radio. Same for John Lennon and Kennedy. Weird....

  15. I was probably more concerned about what I was going to get for my 13th birthday that was to occur in 2 weeks, but my parents were upset about it at the time.

I remember watching the live TV with the Cadillacs in the funeral procession.

  16. 30 years ago ..... out in the garage working on my cycle, getting it tuned for a National drag race in Syracuse N.Y.
Last night..... out in the same garage working on my present motorcycle thinking about that day, Elvis,... and my Dad, who is no longer with us and who had givin me that drag racing bug, at a very early age.
    Good memories!

I got home from school and my family were watching the Elvis tribute on TV. Strange but I remember it really well as it was the last time I saw my Great Grandmother before she died. Can't beleive that was 30 years ago....

High school. Came home to the news. Went to the shop and played Elvis music the rest of the day.... Really the only non-family person I can say I remember when I heard the news...

  23. I really don't recall. I probably read about it in the Stars and Stripes newspaper. It would have had very little impact on me because the real Elvis, the Rockabilly King died sometime in the late 60's, and had been replaced by Elvis, the Vegas Geek.

    Hell, I dont know. I was 12.
Probably building model cars in the basement, or playing with Hot Wheels outside.
Maybe it was slot car racing upstairs?

I seem to remember that Farrah Fawcett poster I had too...........

Similar thing happened to me a few years back . I was in the bath and cut one loose , and as it broke the surface the noise sounded just like the words Pol Pot . Imagine my surprise to hear on the news the next day that the baby murdering scum had died !

Anyhow , I was in the bath again last night when I once again did a bum cough , and if I was Edward Woodward I'd be shitting myself today :D

I was 17, and was driving home from a week long job I had at one of the local county fairs directing traffic. An announcer broke into whatever song was on the radio to tell the story.

  29. I think I was developing fingers at that time.. I don't remember exactly
