  2. I was washing the El Matador in my driveway, when I heard it on the radio. Could not believe it, a man on top of the world, destroyed himself with drugs.

    Big fan. Always.

I was at home. The little kid from down the street knocked on the door and says " You like Elvis huh? He's dead." I turned on the radio and heard something about Baptist Memorial Hospital. I knew it was true. Took my '57 down to the park and the place was packed. Real solemn like, all radios playing Elvis music. A bunch of my friends were there too. I remember being kinda surprised at the reaction.

My future wife was working at the Mililani McDonalds. Manager had to pull all the girls working the counter because of their crying.

    Hawaii loves Elvis.

I was 27 and feeling kinda old and worn-out even then..I was a smokejumper in the NW Piney woods jumpin out of airplanes with a chainsaw into a forest that was on fire, I thought this was a better deal than Viet Nam! I was in a firecamp somewhere in the the Sierra Nevadas heard of Elvis dying at 41 on the crapper. I thought I'm getting too old for this, I need to go back to Texas and relax...

I was helping a friend install a wood stove in his trailer getting ready for winter. Had my jeep cj parked nearby with the radio on. Heard it and did not believe it had to go listen again. The friend I was helping is dead now also. Killed in a car wreck a couple of yrs later.

I was 12 years old. Sucking on mamma's tit and shitting my diaper.

    We were a strange bunch.

Grandpa Joe yelled from the livingroom that he just heard Elvis was dead.

Daddy went in the back room and put on his Elvis suite and never took it off since.

He's dead now, but the last time I checked, he still had that damn suite on.

In all honesty, I was 3 years old and can't remember what I was doing at the time. ;)

I'm more of a Johnny Cash fan though.
When he dies, I'm sure I'll remember where I was when I heard it.

  14. I can't recall anymore what I was doing actually, but I remember exactly what kind of radio we had back then. This news made me to stare it so long. Luxor brought the bad news.

So now tell me you weren't influenced.:)
But check out the videos on the youtube and try and tell me he wasn't one handsome dude with a voice from the gods . Then you'll understand why your momma cried her eyes out at his passing.
and while on this point,I saw a doco on the box about the colonel and how he had to run around and find Elvis after his earliest concerts...he had a habit of fucking every bit of skirt that he could catch!.So next time you think you see Elvis, look again...DNA speaks volumes.:cool:

I was 13 and found out watching the 7:00PM news after coming in from playing sand lot baseball all day.

  18. I was in my mid 20's, and remember being incredulous that my girlfriend was crying over this guy that she had never met, I actually quit seeing her because of it. Might have been a mistake, but not the only one I ever made!

I was watching "clambake" last nite & saying to myself how elvis was reduced to being a "dunking tank clown"after feb. 1964.He had his time & he was outdated.
for some reason I don't rememeber the world coming to a stop when he died!!And i was 28 yo!! not like i was "6 and listening to a elvis song" when i heard!!

On the day he died I was setting up merchandising promotions at some local record stores in NJ. These had been planned several months in advance. I remember people coming into the stores to buy anything Elvis. I found out he died when some customers complained we were taking advantage of his death by merchandising his records. My phone rang off the hook for the next several days as record stores frantically tried to place orders for his records. All record stores sold out of anything Elvis they had in a matter of hours. As it turned out, the suits at RCA in NY decided to only send records to the big retailers in the US, like Walmart, K-mart, etc. This meant that the smaller chains and independent stores didn't get any records for several months. RCA made a bundle of $$$ because they sold everything they could manufacture and the sales reps got screwed on the commissions from the sales. The suits decided to not give them commissions on the huge orders many of them got.
Those were some of the good old days in the record business....

I was 6 months old and still grew to like his music as if I was old enough to when it happened.

  22. Was gettin' ready to go to work in a store...makin' $12 bucks a week!!! Aaaah! Those were the days!...I ended up not going to work after I heard the news. Then a friend of my brother told me right then :" Hey, Elvis is dead...Long live KISS!" So I then proceeded to kick the crap out of him! Felt good.

    Me too.

I hate to be the one to break it to you, but Johnny Cash has died. His house burned down too. Now, will you remember me or the HAMB?

Well, I didn't come along until 9 years later, but I'm really enjoying all these stories ... almost makes me feel like I was there.
