True and with a 427. The last true SS Impala (69), just like the first SS Impala (61) both had hot engines.:)

I just picked up a repopped set for my 283 rebuild. I had original ones on power pack heads.

Very welcome blowby but this also adds another level of complexity here. Everyone is talking about camel humps and I have power packs. Also I think my 283 is 65 from a brookwood or Biscayne. Mine seems 2bbl original as all the date codes match.

So, when did 283s (or 307s) come from the factory with "double hump" heads. I thought the biggest head they ever used was the "power pack" head (until 1967 on 283s, and didn't 307s have the bolt holes in the end of the heads?). I'm thinking that even the fuel injected 283s had "power pack" heads with 1.72 intakes. The first "double hump" heads were on 327s.

As far as the exhaust bolt locks, I don't remember many mechanics putting them back on when they pulled the manifolds. They were kind of a pain to work with for a line mechanic, getting stuff out as fast as possible. So even if the engine is original (I don't think so, Tim), if it's ever had exhaust gaskets put on it in the past 50 years the locks are probably long gone.

For the record, 1961 315HP 283 'vettes came with double hump heads.

I learned something new today, that's a good thing. Now if I don't forget it so I'll have to relearn it tomorrow.

Looks like there were around 1500 of these built? All with 461X heads?

The 63 Impala SS that I ordered new came with a factory tach, with a 5200 RPM redline, if I remember correctly, mounted in the center of the dash and the four speed shifter had the short fat rod with small white knob for Muncie close ratio trans. This may not be a true SS
