i got a pontiac 301 it came with a turbo, my question is i wanna use the motor with out the turbo i was searching for a manifold but i cant find one my question is does any one know what manifold will bolt up?
I think some of the later model fullsize ponchos had 301's 80-87 bonnevilles and such, It seems like every time I popped the hood on one of those it had a 301, and I needed 400 stuff. also we have a 79 ta with a non turbo 301, so the Qjet stuff is out there....
because the 301 has a lower deck than all other Pincho motors, no aftermarket intakes are made. only other option is a Q-jet intake from a 301 in a big car. good luck
i had a 79 catalina with a 301 / 2 bbl.i used an intake from a 80 trans am with an older q-jet. this was in 82 , it was fairly easy to find that intake then . that was the only option then and i really doubt if any aftermarket stuff exists for that thin wall light weight casting piece of junk. why not step up to a 389 or 400? it will bolt right in and is a far superior engine. even with a 4 bbl and 1.6 rockers, that 301 barely had enough grunt to get out of its own way. just my 2 cents. by the way, i have a brand new egr valve for an 80 301 you could have for free if you find one of those manifolds. mike
Get a new turbo, if you want to use the 301. I ***ume yours is locked-up. A low-compression dog 301 will not be worth it's weight without it.
I've got one that is a four bbl intake off of a 301. If you need it,pm me and I will send some pics and see if that is what you need. I will be at the SE Nationals this weekend, so it may be next week before I get back to you.
Amen! Definitely a dog-turd. I'm ***uming your on a budget (like the rest of us!), but if you can find a cheap running 400 or even a 350, you'll be a lot happier with the results.
A 301 isn't worth it's weight even with a turbo, the only place you should use one is if you're doing a numbers matching build of an 80-81 turbo T/A or something like that. The 301 is the **** version of a Pontiac - low deck, thin cast, econo-motor they made from '77 until '81 - it was a corporate motor and used in mid-size Buicks, Pontiac Gran Prix and Catalina, and Firebird. I think you can actually do more with an Olds 307 than a Pontiac 301. The 301 can't be rebuilt, the walls are too thin to bore. I would even run a Buick 231 V6 or a Chevy 4.3 before I'd run another 301, and I'm a Pontiac guy. One thing to watch for, when they first made the one Rochester 2bbl - I forget the name for it, but it's basically the front part of the big 4bbl carb. The 77's and some '78s, used the 4bbl casting with the secondaries plugged - and they bolted to a 4bbl intake - so some 2bbl cars will have a 4bbl intake on them. My '77 LeSabre did. I got all of 1000 miles out of that car before it threw two rods one winter morning. I put another 301 in it and I could go about 10 miles before it overheated, let it cool down and go 10 more. Some sources claim that a 267 or 265 CI version of the 301 was made, too, that would be the only other intake that would fit. I don't know if the motor was actually produced, or not, but there were small versions in that size range of the Chevy and Olds in 77-79. A 301 is good for a few things - the front cover, HEI, and oil pan will all fit any Pontiac motor, and the starter will fit any back to '65.
The Turbo 301 barely had enough power to get out of its own way, if you could keep it running long enough, without puking a rod. I'd hate to think how a naturally aspirated 301 would run, but he's right, it'll be crazy low compression, it won't make a lick of power down low. Even a cheap-o 305 would be a better choice, I think.
Find a Trans Am board to sell it on. Then when there are still no interested parties, junk it. That has to be one of the all time worst engines to ever wear a GM badge. Whew, had to try to help purge the world of those things.
