I know this does not fall in to our year's, but know alot of you guys mess with the 302 swaps and i dont know much ,i have a buddy in our car club ,the other guys in the club want to help get his 49 ford driving again and thinking of putting a 302 in it...i dont know what the differences in frames of the car from our years are most likely everythings different but wondering if any of you have any advise for us...what year's 302 are better what trans might be best to swap in ...he wants to go auto....just any advise at all and if need any info on car let me know....thanks guys.
Actually it is an EZ swap, you can get the mounts from Speedway the best donor car would be from a 1987 to 1993 Mustang for two reasons,Ist the 1987-93 AOD transmissions have the improved lubrication upgrades the earlier ones don't and they are non-computer so nothing special required,1987-93 5.0's (aka 302) are roller cam and also have the dual sump fox body style oil pan which works in a 1949-53 Ford swap even the factory headers on these will clear in a 49-51.An early Mustang Radiator will bolt in almost no mods needed the 6 cyl unit like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/1965-1966-F...ng&vxp=mtr&hash=item3a699b1cd5#ht_1045wt_1185 has the correct lower hose location for the later V8 and has a built in transmission cooler. If you use the early 289 upper hose outlet available in chrome almost any parts store you will be able to use a '66 Mustang upper hose and an '84 Mustang lower hose. You will need a Lokar AOD TV cable if you swap to a Carb and that's pretty much it.
Pretty much what Jeff posted . I have a 49 & 50 Fords myself . I was going to install a built 302/5.0 and a 4 speed top loader but changed my mind . I am building a 1970 Ford 429 Thunder Jet engine and a 4 speed trans for the shoebox . I am building a g***er from one of them ! They are fairly simple to do . There is a guy from the HAMB that has anything you need to do that swap . His name is Chris and he is the nicest guy you will ever meet ! Will answer anything you want to know about the 49 , 50 , 51 Fords . Here is the link - shoeboxford.com They also have a forum too ! Jim
thanks guys you ROCK ! We came across another option we have access to a free y-block thats all dressed up,found some info on a hurst motor mount that will drop it right in but now wondering if it will bolt up to the manual trans the flat head had? will have to ask on the shoebox site..... Either way the 49 will be getting a 302 or a y-block....thanks again guys!
The y block would be a really nice choice as well . Now consider if you are going to use the Y block for lots of traveling and highways , remember if the Y block breaks down , NO ONE will have the parts at the parts store to repair the Y block ! That is the drawback for using the Y block but other than that it's a good engine . That is why I sold mine and went with a Ford 302/5.0 . There are parts everywhere for that engine if you break down ! Personally I wouldn't use a flathead trans behind the Y block but I have seen and read about that being done . I would either use a Y block standard trans , C4 , AOD or a Ford T-5 Trans . There are adapters for all those trans . Here is a link to John Mummerts web site . http://www.ford-y-block.com . He it the king of Y block parts and performance . He has adapters there for the transmissions mentioned . Take a look and enjoy ! Make sure you look at some of the engines and the performance that was made from them . If you have any more questions Please ask away ! I know their is a shoebox group as well BUT there is never anyone around to ask one thing about help over there ! I belong to that group also and no one seems to care about that group at all ! BTW the Hurst adapters are hard to find and costly ! Just use regular engine mounts . Jim
Now that we are on the subject of engine swaps a while back someone posted a copy of an old magazine Y-block swap in a 52-53 Ford with a lot of pictures I tried to find it in our archives using search and couldn't find it,anyone remember who posted it and when?
Jeff I think that was on the HAMB main board as well ! i remember it also . It was about 1 or so years ago . Was very detailed if I remember correctly with all the parts needed to do the swap . I am off to run around for a while . i will help to find it later if you don't find it first . Jim
this is the info on the hurst mount: part 1: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=1458813&d=1318727838 Part2: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=1458814&d=1318727838 we were talking about it and think the y-block would be a choice only for the "cool" factor of doing it to a shoe box and really think that after buying all the stuff to make it work(adapter for trans, hurst mount, etc) that we would be better of just doing a 302 and he would be happier in the long run. still up in the air but were just in the planning stages thank you guys for the input.
Well that is what I did with my 55 Fairlane . I was going with the 292 , big Isky cam , 1957 "G" big valve heads , 3x2 set up and so on so by the time I got everything I wanted , it still wouldn't have given me the HP and torque I wanted for the same money PLUS if something went wrong on the road with the Y block I was stuck . Now with the 302/5.0 it's a lot cheaper to get much better performance wise and the reliability is much better for the 302/5.0 engine and you can find parts anyplace for the 302 ! Now if you aren't going to do the long trips , then I would really consider the Y block . But in the end it really depends on the performance you are looking for the money you will invest . The Y block is a good strong pulling engine ! I have owned 2 so far and served me well but I wanted more power ! One thing to really think about , what ever you decide to go with , just make sure you are happy with the choice and drive the hell out of it ! I do know many people with y blocks and they love them and has served them very well . So now it's up to you ! Jim
