I have an '89 HO 302 I am converting to carb. Since it is a serpentine setup I ***ume it is a reverse rotation water pump. For space considerations, I want to convert to v-belts. So, while I am out junking, what pulleys should I look for and what water pump should I run? Also, do I have to change the front cover to match? If anyone has parts, I would be interested.

I have an '87 302 in mine with the serpentine and it fits just fine. Not sure if there is a big difference between the 2 years or not. I have pictures in my album if you are curious.

You do know that you also will be swapping the oil pan to a front sump? when you do this you will want to swap to an earlier timing cover with the front dip stick provision and if you are going to run a Carb it will also have the provision for a manual fuel pump.

  5. when i did my oil pan swap i saw that my timing cover had a nice flat spot to drill the new dip stick hole. Seemed like ford stamped out the same cover, only the holes were drilled different. this was on an 84 351W. it was pretty easy to do (with the cover off of course)! and i believe i used a Mr. Gasket dipstick, if not then it definitly came from summit so maybe it was their brand. but it fit in snug and i added a little bit of silicone around the edge just for added insurance.

  6. sorry for the double post, but with brackets and pulleys, you'll find that the biggest headaches about sbf's are that they did not use the same pulleys throughout the years and if your motor came with everything, be it Serpetine or V belt use what you have! because most of them will not line up. if you do go to v belt then you will have to change water pumps, the hardest part about that if trusting that the one you get is truly standard rotation. i had trouble with advance auto and autozone because their website said standard and they were always reverse. if you have a junk yard near you, get the pulleys and pumps from an early 80's late 70's Ford van, i believe they were all V belt.

The last thing I would ever do is convert to V belts. Ugh. But that is just my opinion. So what accessories do you want to run?

I used a 94/95 Mustang pump which is shorter than the standard pump. I am only running an alternator right now so I build my own brackets. When I add the A/C and P/S I will do something different.

It should be noted that the short pump creates it's own problems because the alternator hits the valve cover making it necessary to move the alternator out for clearance. If you go lower it hits the upper control arm.

I used a 5.0 302 in the wagon and it had a serpentine belt system,I was not going to use it because it just didn't fit my idea of what could have been used in 1954 so I finally found the correct pulleys that March manufactures.

Granted the pulleys are billet aluminum but they work great. HRP RanchWagon3212010003-vi.jpg

Did you use adapters to make those fit? All the ones I have seen are quite tall and I don't see them in the pic.

I want to do something similar for my tbucket that's why I ask.

Not my engine but what I plan on doing.

Yes i bought the adaptors but was leary of that sandwich leaking. I used 'the right stuff' and let it dry up for a few days before i fired it. So far no leaks. Lids are 66-67 or so fe mercs. Really gives the small block a set of shoulders
