I know that there are gear compatibility issues with the later model 302s and the common small block Ford distributors. Does anyone know of a single-wire HEI that will work with my 88 Lincoln 302? I see on Speedway's website that they have exactly what I want (single-wire HEI that eliminates the need for an MSD) but i suspect that it's not compatible with my engine.
When you get the new unit before removing the old distributor bring the timing marks up to TDC on #1, make a mark to align the rotor ,position the new dizzy's rotor a hair to the left before you put it in and lube up the new units O-ring.It is real common to have problems getting it to seat if you don't do this and be very gentle you can drop that oil drive shaft into the pan,NO FUN!
Pretty much the same way, having it set on TDC is the important part so it will line up with the shaft if not it will lack seating by about a 1/4".
You're talking about something like item #38820: http://www.performancedistributors.com/fordssdui.htm If your engine has an OEM roller cam, the dizzy gear must be hardened iron or other material to match the material of the cam. I'm not a fan of bronze gears as they wear quickly...
