putting a 302 Ford in my Model A,engine has the small sparkplugs and no provision for a mechanical fuelpump,so doe's that mean it uses the Late style firing order? is there a casting number to determine which it is?
do you know if its a 5.0 ho if so then it has the 351 windsor firing order if its not a ho then it has the 260 289 302 firing order 260 - 302 1 5 4 2 6 3 7 8 351W 1 3 7 2 6 5 4 8 and number one is on the passenger side front and dist turn counter clock wise (im not trying to be a smart A$$
I have a mild built 302 I am building in my 57. My dad built it, said it had a 351 cam and the firing order was of that, 351, not 302.....someone correct me if I'm wrong.
I figured it out ,mine is the early firing order 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8.......I was hoping my motor was the HO buttsnot
Pull the number one plug and find tdc compression then go to number 3 if you feel compression as you turn it you have a 351 or HO cam if not a standard 302 cam. If you want to pull the drivers valve cover turn the engine over watch number 6 turn it over untell the exhaust valve closes and the intake just starts to open stop and look at number 5 exhaust valve if it's open you have an 351 cam.
I bought a mystery motor and was hoping it was a garden variety 302 but turned out to be a H O. So much for the gas milage. I wired it for the old order but wouldn't run so switched to 351 mode and away she went. Sounds healthy as hell to.
Tedley, I have a 89 H.O with the A.O.D. in my Fairlane. I have 4.11 gears, 750 Holley and a Cobra intake. Bought the engine and trans used with 160,000 miles on it and it gets 17 mpg. You should be just fine on the mileage.
Shoot, we used to put 302 cams in 351W and just rewire the cap - it doesn't matter as long as your cap is wired like your cam is ground. Not sure of the year, but I thought Ford did standardize everything to the 351W firing order - something about reducing stress on the first crank journal....been a long time, hard to remember that sort of detail.
