Hey guys, im pulling my 350 out of the car this winter. Cylinders 7 and 8 are bad. Question is this, should i rebuild or go with a 302 and do something craxy like putting a ford in my 37 ford? What say you? Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G890A using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
I say read this thread, then decide: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/think-a-bit-before-you-ask.1036185/
At this point the primary and probably only reason for swapping from the SBC to a SBF is to gain blue oval creds with the hard core Ford brigade. Or the "I think I can win a Ford in a Ford" award trophy at a car show. Or the simple fact that you yourself are a Hard core Ford engine guy and bought the car because you liked the car and not because it had the Chevy engine in it. It isn't just pulling one engine and sticking in the other it's: New matching trans for the engine or new adapter. New mounts for engine Most likely new or reworked radiator. Firewall work or special water pump for fan clearance. A **** load of other small pieces because what was with the Chevy doesn't work with the Ford. Plus down for an engine rebuild time is a lot shorter than down for and engine swap time is. Or pull the tired engine, rebuild it, maybe put some nifty dress up trinkets on it, bolt it back in and go again without a lot of h***les because you have the same basic setup you have been driving for ?? length of time.
He mentioned putting a ford in a ford, so I'd ***ume he means a 302. It would easily consume the whole winter.....
Or 302 Lincoln Y Block or 302 GMC??? No help, just muddying the waters.... Or put a set of these on your SBC and really piss us die hard Ford guys off
I have one of each,my Deuce has a 350 and the Ranch Wagon is powered by a 302. Many times people use the sbc because the dimensions of the chevy wagon is shorter, the Ford water pump is longer and in the tight confines of the Fords does create a problem but with planing it will work. I used a sbf in the wagon because I wanted to make it look like the engin e could have been in the car from the factory. The number one rule in building hot rods is there is no rules, use the engine that makes you happy. HRP
Yea, he talking 302 Ford I'd guess. It'd be the long way around IMO, being an sbc already lived there. D'ffernt strokes though...
350 would make it more desirable to me but Im generally a chevy guy for the most part even tho I do like many ford body styles.
If your 350 has a short pump the ford is about 1.5 " longer with a long pump they are about the same. But the front distributor may let you shove the engine back some
I have a Chevy in a Chevy and if I was in you place I'd go with a Ford in a Ford as long as it didn't cost much more and could be done reasonably easy.
I'm a Ford kind of guy. I would say, "Make a Ford a Ford And Leave It Alone". It's not a real Ford if it's powered by Chevy.
Ok I,m a Chevy person and have been all my life, but when a I got my first hot rod a 32 ford high boy about a year and half ago it had a sbf 302 engine to my surprise, I told the salesman who the hell puts a ford engine in a 32 ford. Well to make a long story short I liked the car and the price was right so I bought it, and its been ok, but the things I notice is that the engine sits about 6" higher in the ch***is than a sbc because of the oil pump and oil filter which makes the trans hump larger. Also there is not as many accessories for the sbf, look in the Summit Racing catalog there are two pages for ford and 10 or more for chevy. If I was in your position I would definitely stay with the chevy engine!
I don't remember cross members under the engine on a 32 so why would oil pump and the filter require the engine to sit higher?
me I'm a ford guy with a thing for vintage cad power. that said I recently decided to pull the cad 390 from my current project (avatar) for a 350. why you ask? simple economics. I have a fresh rebuilt 350 that was pulled from a flip vehicle because the buyer wanted to go with a ford. I hot rod on a budget so that change saves me tons of money even though it's a sacrifice. that's a long way to say "whatever works for you Sent from my SM-G920R4 using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
It's not an engine change. It's and engine, trans, frame mod, perhaps some electrical, plumbing, mechanical connections like shifter, gas pedal/linkage. Could run into firewall surgery, paint and body work then joins the party. 1/2 way through something stupid or tragic happens, or someone needs you for an extended time you didn't count on, or you simply need the money right now and that Ford idea just didn't quite get done. Now your running car is worth a fraction of what it was when it was a good ol simple SBC in there, like countless others, because it's popular, easy to service, fits like it was made to, and I could go on and on but we're nearing boredom right now. Hey, I really am a "gl*** 1/2 full" kinda guy and don't mean to piss on your Cherrios, but sometimes logic is hiding in plain sight. If you have a need to do a major change drop a flatty back in there. Or not...
Truth. There is no "just a _________." in the rod and custom world. Even if you swapped SBC for SBC, you WILL find something wrong, or something will go wrong that you do not expect. It is often better to choose the path that will keep these eventualities to a minimum. Otherwise, if you are not faint-of-heart, faint-of-****, and faint-of-wallet, go for it.
in my world the needed changes involved with a change over to Ford would not be worth the trouble. sure I could do it, but I don't see it as any improvement.
