i tried lookin for info on here already covering this but couldnt find anything... anyhoo... ive got a 50 ford with the original flathead v8 in it that is really down. ive been given a rebuilt 302 cleveland and am thinking of putting that into it. what sort of problems am i goin to encounter??? Moving steering box etc? would putting a 302w be a better idea???? would being right hand drive make any difference??? id prefer the flathead but $$$ are keeping me from doin it!!! aaaaaaarrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhh help!!!!!!!!!!!! anyone...anyone...
do you mean 351? Personally I think... and this is my OPINION. you should keep it traditional if your going to alter it. This IS a trad message board, not street rod a rama. that you should put a motor in that car that has some soul.. like a nailhead, or a rocket motor, or a cad, early smallblock, or keep the flathead or a Y BLOCK if you have to stay ford. ford didnt come out with those motors till the mid sixtys. to late/ depending if you even know what you have. The majority of the masses take the easy way out of makeing something marginal into something that RULES. Thats my advice... take it or leave it... at least I said IT. Tuck I have a 50 ford with a flathead 3 deuces and edmunds heads... and im putting a tri carbed 390 cad in my chopped 49...
FWIW: In Australia, they actually had production 302C's. Heavier 302 blocks with Cleveland heads. The heads have closed combustion chambers around 58cc.
i put a mustang 302 in my 49 and there was no problems. there is a Co. that makes the motor mounts and the tranny mounts and it goes togather easy i used the mustang stock hedders (not manifolds) and they fit like a glove. hope that helps you
Tuck can talk that way because he has parts availability that you don't have "Down Under"...!!! I helped ruttencutter put a 302 in his 49 and I believe that you'll need a Rear Sump oil pan, buy a cable type (aftermarket) throttle set-up, and a floor mounted shifter. We made the Engine anchors out of angle Iron to accept Factory motor mounts and the simply bolted the angles to top of the front crossmember. For the tranny we took a piece of 1/2 inch barstock and laid it across, drilled, and bolted it to the cross member and drilled two other holes in it to accept the factory trany mount.!!!! I'll see if I can find that thread from last october before the "Hunnert Car Pile-Up"...!! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=30175&&showall=1 And dont be afraid to cut slices on each side of the bellhousing area for clearance...!! just make two slices and lift the sheet metal enough to clear the tranny. Have fun! Mark
The 302C must be like the Boss 302 we had in the US. They used cleveland like heads. I would like to get my hands on one of those 302C's
I have a 302w-c6 in my 51. Used the stock tranny mount but modified it to acccept the trans mount. There are several companies that make a kit to install the 302. Butches Rod shop was the first name that comes to mind. Didn't have to modify the trans hump either. I have a ranger rearend in it. It bolts in place. I also used the stock acccelerator pedal rod and it was a standard shift. I used the shifting arm and it hooks right up to the trans. Pretty simplereally. TP
302c & 351c have the same block just different heads and different stroke. 302Boss had a Windsor block with the Clevo heads adapted. davertats, go to http://www.hot-rod.com.au/benchracing/ do it before the end of the week as the site is going offline see other postA hot rod forum dies.....HRI R.I.P.
Well, if it's got a 351C block, good luck finding a rear-sump pan. I don't know what they put in cars down under as far as pans, but to my knowledge, there was no factory 351C with a rear-sump pan. You'll also be looking at custom headers/exhaust. With a Windsor, you can get the pan you need (really want a mid-60s econoline, but a rear-sump will work) relatively easily. Late model Mustang headers fit reasonably well too. The Cleveland engine mounts should be the same as the Windsor, so if you choose to go the kit route, the 302 kits should work.
thanks guys for the helpfull posts... as for keepin it traditional... im tryin to do this thang on a very limited budget at the moment and with a more of a diy aproach to it... hell, id prefer the flatty any day, but a free rebuilt motor (off my old man) doesnt come often... its a closed engine bay anyway, so whos gonna know, or care for that matter, whats in it... and yes we are VERY limited with what we can ge a hold of out here... i will be hangin on to the flatty and eventually rebuild an whack' it in somethin else... but as i said... $$$ are holdin me back. im not tryin to justify myself here but i thought id give ya'll an idea why im doin it...
oh, and thanx jimmy b. i never knew that the hot-rod web site had a forum... now i feel like a moron!!! just in time to see it shut down...
I believe that a 351M/400 pan from a 4wd truck (late 7os-early 80's) will fit the block. That is if the 302C oil pan rails are the same as a 351C.
Arrgh! You guys are right - I'd completely forgot about the M-series piles O' crap....(hate 'em, why I forget 'em!)
hahaha... its funny how things can change in a week!!! came across a rebuilt flatty reasonably priced at a swap meet yesterday. now all the worry bout tryin to fit a 302 is over, and i get to keep it more traditional!!!!!!!! thanks again... dave
Good find!!! I know a lot of people here will tell you how your car "should be", but when you get in and drive it should be YOUR car. Build it how YOU want it and drive the crap out of it.
